Pago 14 Daily Nebraskan Thursday, March 22, 1984 n 1 1" j SH If T T "3 "1 j i By Ilirk ZcboL&y - , Women's golf Coach Jerry Fisher said he believes he has two golfers, seniors Cathy Nelson and Shelley Godeken, who can compete with the best in the country. But he said he can't get eight players of that caliber to golf at Nebraska. "If a girl is looking at two universities and one's down south and the other one's Nebraska, weather is going to play an important part in that decision," Fisher said. "The climate hurts recruiting." Fisher said all his golfers except one are Nebras kans. But if those Nebraska golfers get some time to catch up with the year-round golfers down south, they'll do well in the Big Eight, Fisher said. Last April the Nebraska women won the Big Eight tournament championship. Five of the other conference teams are in states south of Nebraska. Fisher said he works with Nebraska golfers to improve their scores. The team has been practicing Monday through Thursday evenings at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen ter indoor track. Fisher said there is room to hit balls a short distance, and the team uses camera equipment to distance, and the team uses camera equipment to make swing changes. "But it's not as good as being outside," Fisher said. Some of the other Big Eight teams, after playing outdoors most or all of the winter, already are com peting in southern tournaments, he said. Fisher said the Nebraska golfers probably won't start hitting outside until spring break. They leave then for three or four days of preparation in Texas for the Sooner Invitational April 1-3 in Oklahoma City. "We're going to try to catch up" Fisher said. "If we hit good weather in Texas we plan to hit very hard." Even so, Fisher said, Nebraska probably will not win the Sooner Invitational. But the Big Eight tournament is another story. He said Nebraska startled some people by winning last year. He wasn't surprised, however, and wouldn't be if the Huskers win this year. "By the end of April, I've got girls that I feel are very competitive with the girls at Oklahoma State," Fisher said. He said that Oklahoma State and Oklahoma must be considered the conference favorites at this point. Nationally, Fisher said, Tulsa is his favorite. He said he thinks the Cornhuskers never will be com petitive with the best teams in the country from the Sun Belt, simply because of the Nebraska climate. Among schools in the northern states, Fisher said Ohio State is the only team better than his. Fisher said Nebraska has little chance of making nationals in May on an at-large bid, because nine of the top 1 2 teams in the country from last season competed in Nebraska's region.
