Kerrey proclaims day
to promote agriculture
Gov. Bob Kerrey proclaimed today Agriculture
Day in Nebraska in honor of the nationwide celebra
tion of Agriculture Week.
Rex Messersmith, director of the Nebraska Lives
tock and Feeders Association, said that statewide
events will honor agriculture.
Nebraska's state senators will meet today at a
noon luncheon at the governor's mansion, Mes
sersmith said. The event is sponsored by the state
department of agriculture and the Ag 40 group. Ag
40 consists of 40 representatives from agricultural
organizations around the state. The group works on
projects in the College of Agriculture, Messersmith
said. '
A "Beef Tidbit" dinner will be served tonight in the
Capitol Rotunda, Messersmith said. The event is
sponsored by the Nebraska Feeders Auxiliary and
the Cowbells, a women's organization that works
with the Nebraska Stockgrowers in promoting beef
throughout the state.
An agricultural display will be on exhibit at the
Gateway Shopping Mall, and radio stations and
newspapers will promote agriculture throughout
this week, Messersmith said.
Students cruise the holiday highway

Frontier Airlinesvplans to discontinue service to
Scottsbluff and North Platte June 6 because the
flights are not showing a profit, said a Frontier
Airlines employee. The reduction will limit service to
three Nebraska cities: Grand Island, Omaha and
Lincoln.
John Jones, Frontier Airlines' city manager, said
only about 180 people fly to North Platte each
month and 250 to Scottsbluff.
Presently, Frontier has two flights a day that stop
in North Platte and Scottsbluff on their way to
Denver. Round trip flights to North Platte and
Scottsbluff cost $ 1 28 and $ 1 06 respectively.
For young men and women going west or
elsewhere for spring break, a less expensive way
to get home is by bus. Greyhound is offering a
student discount between March 22 and April 2.
Students can travel anywhere in the U.S. that
Greyhound goes round trip for $100 or less.
Students must show their student I.D. cards when
buying tickets.
Students , who live in Omaha have many travel
alternatives for spring break.
Greyhound and Trailways offer a relatively in
expensive fare to Omaha, charging $10.20 and
$11.70 respectively a round trip.
The Lincoln Eppley Xpress provides a direct ride
from Lincoln to Omaha's Eppley Airfield. The X
Press, which leaves from the downtown Hilton, 9th
and P streets, will take students to Omaha for $14.
Amtrak will move students along the rails to
Omaha for $10 each way.
Frontier Airlines offers the cheapest, flight to
Omaha from Lincoln charging $22 each way.
"Most students drive home for spring break,"
Jones said.
When asked how they plan to get home for spring
break, UNL students agreed with Jones about their
choice of transportation.
"I have a car and I don't like buses," said Tim
Gubbels of Randolph.
"I don't know how we're getting home yet," said
Darrell Parks and Craig Averman of Omaha. "We
have lots of friends down here with cars. We could
take a bus if that's our last resort."
Brad Rustan of Bellevue was a bit perplexed. :
"I don't know...a flying carpet," he said.
