The Daily Ncbraskan welcomes brief letters to the
editor from all readers and interested others.
Letters will be selected for publication on the
basis of clarity, originality, timeliness and space
available. The Daily Nebraskan retains the right to
edit all material submitted.
Readers also are welcome to submit material as
guest opinions. Whether material should run as a
letter or -guest opinion, or not run, is left to the
editor's discretion.
Letters and guest opinions sent to the newspaper
become property of the Daily Nebraskan and cannot
be returned. ,
Anonymous submissions will not be considered
for publication. Letters should include the author's
name, year in school, major and group affiliation, if
any. Requests to withhold names from publication
will not be granted.

Smut on campus
There comes a time in everybody's life when they
are so full of gratitude, they just don't know who to
thank first. I have this feeling right now. I guess I
could start by thanking Dr. Ruth Westheimer for
coming to our sexually ignorant campus, and en
lightening us with her infinite knowledge on sexual
behavior. Dr. Ruth, thank you for turning our lives
around.
But then maybe all of my thanks could just go to
Lisa Davis, the sharp investigative reporter who
brought the Westheimer story to front page billing of
our homey campus newspaper (Daily Nebraskan,
March 13). I found the piece about the onion rings a
novel idea, and am hopeful that you will keep us up
to date on other such games to play in our leisure.
One more thanks, and this one goes to the dear
old Daily Nebraskan itself. Ill be saving more money
from now on, thanks to you. I've just cancelled my
three porno subscriptions. Why pay the bucks when
I can now pick up free smut in every building on
campus?

Amendment not needed
Eric Peterson's column (Daily Nebraskan, March
15) did an excellent job of approaching the school
prayer issue with clear thinking and sensitivity,
something too often absent when this question is
debated. My compliments.
As a citizen, I object to the prayer amendment as a
totally unnecessary and potentially messy legality.
Prayer is already our inalienable right, at school or
at home. Any student can pray before class, before
lunch, before a test or a game, or anytime for that
matter. Those who want to pray can pray to the god
of their own belief and in silent words of their own
choosing. Why confuse the situation with a con
stitutional amendment?
As a Christian, I fear the abuses and malpractices
that may occur because of the amendment would
cause far more harm than good to the spirituality of
youngsters. I seriously doubt that any recited prayer
in a classroom will deepen anyone's personal relation
ship with God. Spiritual upbringing is clearly a

Tobacco 'offensive
I would like to address the disgusting habit of
chewing tobacco and the related revolting habit of
spitting in the drinking fountains on campus.
I do not enjoy walking up to a drinking fountain
and discovering gross bits of tobacco and mucus
floating in a clogged drain. It would be appreciated
if these offensive individuals would cease spitting in
the fountains. Certainly the garbage cans are much
more appropriate for the expectorant.
While chewing tobacco b offensive to those who
don't it would be less offensive if those who do would
have respect for those who don't Such consideration
should be expressed by allowing non-chewers to
enjoy a clean drinking fountain.

Letter is fun time1
In response to Greg Witt's letter (Daily Nebraskan,
March 1 5); I would like to say not all is lost, Mr. Witt.
Feminists and minorities do have a sense of humor.
We still are highly offended by the cartoon but we
laughed at your letter. Thanks for the fun time.
And thanks for explaining the "joke" for all of us
with no sense of humor who didnt understand what
it really meant.

Lent not just a test

Kema Soderberg's column (Daily Nebraskan,
March 1 5) left me with mixed reactions, but it made
me stop and think. She made some very true
statements. Self-denial is a way of sharing in Christ's
suffering and many Catholics do take this seriously.
The purpose of Lent and the practice of sacrifice is
not an endurance test. Lent and sacrifice are
important tools for reshaping our lives in the image
of Christ. If we practice self-denial for the wrong
reason or without reason, it is fruitless and absurd.
Catholics do not need to give up faith for Lent but
we do need to give up our ignorance and misinfor
mation concerning church teachings. Lent is a call
to deepen our relationship with God, to bind our
selves back to the source of our life. We will not be
able to offer a meaningful sacrifice until we have
some knowledge of God and our relationship with
Him.
