Monday, March 19, 1984 Daily Ncbraskan Pago 9 Demons roll Continued from Pce 8 DePaul, while it wasn't shooting that much better (40 percent), used a full-court press to force Illinois State into quick shots and spent the greater part of the half at the free throw line. The Deacons were up 38 31 when the gun sounded, and, with Corbin and freshman Dallas Com egys dominating the boards in the second half, coasted to the easy win leading by as many as 19 twice. 'There are times when you see it slipping away from you and you feel very badly. But today DePaul just fiat beat us," Redbird coach Bob Donewald said. "Our fouling was a direct result from our being a step behind. Usu ally, when you foul a lot, it's charac teristic of being too far behind the other player." While the CBS cameras sent the game out to a national television audience, the still cameras focused on Meyer. The 70-year-old Blue Dem- on coach said Illinois State made a game of it last time by outrebound ing the Blue Demons. "There was no way' they were going to outrebound us today," he said afterwards. It was the first time in three straight NCAA appearan ces that a DePaul team advanced past the first game. "I feel I've just been reprieved," Meyer said. "I cleaned out my locker Friday, and I remember thinking that it could be the last time. But, I felt confident we could win this game. Illinois State has a very good team, but they just don't have the talent we do. I kept throwing play ers at them and they couldn't match all those players." Corbin was eight-for-eight at the free throw line and six of nine from the field. Comegys and point guard Kenny Patterson also finished with 14 Doints each. Rickie Johnson had 14 points to lead Illinois State, which finished at 23-8. r . .. , X- W " I i r x - -rVv.i.x-iU ... x - -t Musketesr-land ... Continued from Pege 8 Xavier has won eight of its last nine games with the one loss coming to Oral Roberts. The Musketeers count wins over Marquette and Dayton on their ledger. Besides having to play its second-straight game on the road, Nebraka's biggest worry right now is the status of forward Stan Cloudy. Cloudy went to the floor with more than 12 minutes left in the first half of Thursday's game with Creighton. Cloudy injury has been diagnosed as a slight strain to the ligament in his left knee. Upsets in the NIT have been the rule rather than the exception thus far. Pre-tourney favorites Geor gia Tech and North Carolina State both fell Thurs day as did Oregon and Wichita State.
