School for the deaf...
Weverka said deaf leaders also become leaders in
the general society. They form associations like the
Nebraska Association of the Deaf and the Omaha
Association of the Deaf. They get signing put on
television programs and help get telephones for the
deaf installed s o deaf people are better linked to the
hearing population. They help bring deaf people
into the larger community.
But this large community of deaf and hearing
people is easily broken down. Weverka said the
recent controversy about the state school has label
ed deaf people in a negative way. He said some
people seem to wonder if a deaf person on the street
is from "that school."
"We're being looked at as if we are animals," he
said. "All the bad things (about the school) are being
put on the front page of the newspaper and all the
good things in the middle."
