Wrestling...
Continued from Psge 12
Another reason to see
the tour, Hutchins said, is
the athletic style theyoung
er guys bring to it.
"When we started this
project, I confess I was a
little dubious," Hutchins
said. "I was not a pro
wrestling fan. What I saw
on cable appeared to be a
little sluggish, just one
guy beating on another
until he couldn't get up
anymore.''
"But this tour has more
of a European look to it,"
he said. "It's going to be
fast-paced, a lot of flying
drop kicks and such."
To add to the mayhem
in the ring, the tour also
includes an elaborate light
and sound system, Hut
chins said.
For Ryan, the strength
and youth of the other
wrestlers is pushing him
toward the point of retire
ment ... or wherever old
wrestlers go.
Unless you really want
to experience a massive
thumping, don't ask Ryan
if his trade is really fake
or not. If it were all set
up, he said, the promo
ters would not pay him
and his fellow grapplers
top dollar tonight to do
what they do. They just
as easily could get three
guys from the docks for
six times less if they just
wanted to put on a show,
Ryan said.
"I do not knock my pro
fession," he said. "People
can have all the ideas
they want. But wrestling
has allowed me to see the
world. It's bought me my
own farm, and it has put
my two daughters through
school.
"This sport will never
die. I know because they've
blasphemed it, they've put
it down, theyVe done every
thing they can to destroy
it. But I would say it is
one of the top three per
capita sports in the coun
try. I intend to be in it
until I just get too old to
do it anymore."
So when you go to Persh
ing tonight, and scream
at the referee to notice
that the big, grungy goon
is using an infamous "for
eign object to pummel the
fair-haired clean-cut
guy, remember mat tne
outcome is in doubt
anything can happen. And,
as usual, the good likely
will win unless foul play
is involved. Don't expect
Ryan to pull out one of
those objects, though. He's
a good guy this time around
"I like to think I'm a
good guy," Ryan said. "But
I look more like a bad
guy."
