Yugoslav President Mika Spy ak declared the Games formally open, crowning six years of planning and building by Yugoslavs for the staging of the biggest sports event ever held in this Communist country. The high point came when the Olympic torch, lit on Mount Olympus three weeks ago; was brought into the arena by cross-country skiers after a relay journey across Yugoslavia, International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch, presi ding over his first games since taking office in 1980, wished the partici pants luck and, speaking in Serbo-Croat, said, Thank you, Yugoslavia thank you, Sarajevo." Hundreds of colored bal loons were released into the air, and after the five ringed Olympic flag had been raised, 1,800 young Yugoslavs in multi colored snowsuits treat ed the crowd to a daz zling display of dance and folklore.
