Intramural stars led by former Huslcer
By Jeff Carr
The competition in the men's intra
mural basketball open league may be
better than ever this year. Familiar
names dot the rosters of almost every
team.
Harper Seven's team includes former
Huskers Claude Renfro and Lenard
Johnson. Iicnfro, a G-6 forward from
Winslow, Ariz., scored nine points per
game and led Coach I foe Iba's team in
rebounding List year when they made
the final four of the NIT.
Johnson scored five points and grab
bed three rebounds per game.
"We've been winning most of our
games by 20 to 30 points and we
haven't really been pushing," said team
spokesman Fat Albright.
According to Albright, Renfro and
Johnson are the only players who start
every game. But the team includes
other good players. Jay Braun, a 6-0
guard who played high school ball in
Colorado must also be considered one
of the top players in the league.
Dunks Unlimited is currently 5 -0
and some observers predict they will
win the showdown with Harper Seven
when they play Thursday night. Dunks
Unlimited has players who have proven
themselves in Nebraska Class A high
school basketball.
Clete Blakcman, a 6-2 freshman quarter
hack on the Cornhusker football team,
leads the list of players who come from
schools like Norfolk, Lincoln Northeast,
Kearney and Bellevue East. Blakeman
averaged more than ten points a game
for a Norfolk team that was rated
second in the state for much of last
season. Other ex-Panthers on the team
include 6-5 Mike Hoefler and 6-5 John
Cook.
Another reason for the team's suc
cess is Mark Diaz, a starter on the Nor
theast state championship team two
years ago.
"We have the speed to run and gun,
but we can slow it down," said team
member Jeff Norblade. "It just depends
how we feel that night.
The toughness of the league has
forced some teams to drop out, but
' one team that won't be intimidated is
Bob's Boys. The team is made up of the
defensive backs on the Husker football
team. The players include Dave Burke,
who played high school basketball in
Utah, Neil Harris, who played high
school ball in Kansas City and Gary.
Schneider, a second-string safety, who
played at O'Neill, Neb. According to the
Recreation Office, Mike McCashland is
also a member of the team.
Bob's Boys had a chance to play
Harper Seven on Super Bowl Sunday,
but forfeited.
"We took a lot of ribbing about miss
ing the game " said team coach Matt
Strasburger.
Other league members include the
Iguanas, Vitale's Bar and Grill, The
Aces, Bud's Boys and Around the Corners.
