Adpolicybad
Lsst week, I wanted to
place a classified ad for a
roommate in the Daily
Nebraskan. Iking a Chris
tian, I desired that my
potential roommate be
one, too. However, the girl
taking my ad said that
theDaily Nebraskan could
not take such an ad, label
ing it discriminatory. She
suested the term "reli
gious" instead. I asked her
if the rest of the ad wa3
OX and she said there
were no other problems.
So, I paid for it to run
Thursday and Friday. It
was in Thursday's paper,
but was missing in Fri
day's edition. I was told
that it was rejected be
cause it was still discrim
inatory, even though it
had been OK'd before, and
the reason it ran on Thurs
day was because it hadn't
been caught.
Since when is saying
"Christian" or even "reli
gious" discriminatory? If
one is using this ratio
nale, why not carry it to
its fullness? In other words,
end all discriminating
phrases. Dont say "non
smoker wanted" because
then you're discriminat
ing against smokers; don't
say "male" or "female" be
cause then you're xliscri
minating against a cer
tain sex group; don't even
put the rent down because .
then you're discriminat
ing against the poor.
Both the Lincoln Jour-,
nal andStar and the Thrif
ty Nickel took my ad
with no complaints. Ob
viously these two papers
have their act together
more than the incompe
tent, discriminatory Daily
Nebraskan.
The point is clear: The
Daily Nebraskan's argu
ment is ludicrous and re
veals who is really being
discriminatory to whom.
And lest anyone accuse
me of not reacting in a
Christian manner, let me
remind you that Jesus
strongly rebuked the Phar
isees. You, dear Daily Neb- -raskan,
are the Pharisees.

"Once again, for next
year, I shudder to note
that salary increases a
gain have highest prior
ity in regents' and admi
nistrative intentions," Petr
v23 quoted Li the Lincoln
Journal
"The inconsistency be
tween stated intentions
and achievement is ... a
direct consequence of com
placently non-assertive
posture which we as
nants of a meal which
others have eaten."
The suggestions
of union opponents crys
tallize in a wait-and-see
position that is clearly
inappropriate in the pol
itical situation outlined
by Petr.
Being represented by a
union is one way UNL
teachers can fight condi
tions that have produced
apathy and depression in
various departments dur
ing these years of low
funding. And that's some
thing for students to cheer
about.
