By Toer Swanson To see or not to see, that is the question posed by the latest film from Mel Brooks. To Be or Not to Be, now playing at the Douglas 3, is a slight departure from the usual Brooks craziness and an entrance into the more serious world of drama. Film Review The zaniness is evident in the opening scene in which Frederick Bronski (Brooks) and his wife, Anna, (Anne Bancroft) do a strange Polish rendition of "Sweet Georgia Brown." The biting satire of the next sketch, titled "Naughty Nazis," is judged too provocative by the Polish government but this is made immaterial by the news that war has been,, declared. The sudden war breaks up the young romance between Anna and a handsome Polish pilot played by Tim Matheson. The film's title is derived from the cue to Matheson that Bancroft wants to see him, behind her husband's back . . .literally. The film picks up when Matheson returns to Poland to stop a Gestapo agent who is on his way to expose the Polish underground. Soon Matheson involves the entire theater company in undermining the German occupation forces. - Brooks turns out to be the hero of the film by turning from a vain, egotistical chicken into a vain, egotistical hero. The context of the film does not allow Brooks to irreverently seek laughs as has done in his earlier movies. His performance is credible as a man changed by circumstance into realizing hi3 true talent beyond that of his questionable "Highlights from Hamlet." His impersonation of a German agent, a colonel and Hitler himself are some of the film's high points. Anne Bancroft is charming and elegant, if some what unnerved, as Anna Bronski, queen of the Bronski theater. Her role evolves from a lonely, adventurous actress into a quick-thinking Samaritan. Her juggling of the advances of scores of men while duping the Germans and saving her theater company is an amusing relief from some of the more sobering scenes of the Nazi occupation. Matheson portrays Lt Sobinski, an intensely . loyal if not worldly pilot, driven to accomplish his mission. Sobinski is the most static character, a pillar of stability in an unstable world. Charles Durning is very funny as the bumbling and paranoid Col. Erhardt. Christopher Lloyd is the perfect foil to Durning as the confused but loyal Capt. Schultz. Durning and Lloyd carry on a wacky bantern with lightning-quick gag3 in the style of Brooks' earlier movies such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein .
