Nebraska forward Stan Cloudy meets resistance in the fern cf Missouri
forward Eon Jones as he attempts to drive to the basket Jones and the
rest of the Tigers defeated Nebraska Saturday night, CO-43.
By Ward 7. Triplctt III
It was a bizarre little scene. On the
sidelines of the Bob Devaney Sports
Center, where he had won close and
controversial games the last two years,
there was Norm Stewart trying to sup
press a smile. .Many of the 14,378
Husker fans in attendance were wav
ing sins saying "Stand Up, Norm" and
singing "Happy Birthday" to the 49-year-old
Missouri coach at the begin
ning of Saturday night's basketball
game. .
"That was a tremendous, tremen
dous gesture," Stewart said later. "I
really appreciated it."
But Stewart showed his apprecia
tion by coaching the Tigers to another
close win on the Husker court as the
Tigers beat Nebraska, 50-48. The game
left each team with a 1-1 conference
record.
The Huskers trailed by as many as
seven points in the second half, before
rallying to claim a one point lead, 40
39, with 6:32 to play. But Missouri 12
4, scored the next seven points of the
game and managed to hold on to the
ball in the last two minutes to claim a
win. The Tigers were fouled only twice
in the final two minutes, and Greg Cav
ener and Ron Jones each made two
free throws.
Tiger famula far victory
Stewart attributed the victory to the
comeback, after the Huskers had once
taken a slight lead, good defense and
making the free throws at the end.
Meanwhile, Nebraska Coach Moe Iba
was understandably disappointed.
"We tried to prepare them, but when
you play like that we (the coaches)
must have done something wrong," Iba
said.
Stewart gave the Huskers early trou
ble by juggling his own starting lineup.
Billy Roundtree, a sophomore averag
ing nine minutes of playing time a
game, and Cecil Estes, the usual sixth
man, started in place of the Tigers'
season-long leading scorer and
rebounder Malcolm Thomas and Blake
Wortham, a 6-10 sophomore.
Despite the presence of Roundtree,
Prince Bridges and Ron Jones, all
guards, in the starting lineup, Stewart
had 6-10 center Greg Cavener bring
the ball up court when the Huskers
were not pressing. That, Stewart said,
was meant to bring Nebraska center
Dave Hoppen out to defend Cavener.
Both changes worked well, Stewart
said. Hoppen picked up an early foul
on Cavener near midcourt, and Tho
mas, who sat for the game's first eight
minutes, scored four quick points in an
otherwise low-scoring first half in which
both teams shot 34 percent from the
field. The former junior college All
American scored the Tigers' first'six
points, all on shots from within six
feet, of the second half. He also hit a
short jumper to put Missouri back on
top after Stan Clouds 25-foot jumper
gave Nebraska its only lead.
Glimpse cf Husker hepa
Nebraska, which trailed 23-18 at
halftime, managed its comeback behind
the shooting of freshman Brian Carr.
Missouri led 35-28 with 13:21 to play
before Carr hit two' consecutive shots.
The Huskers had a chance to cut the
lead to one before an Estes steal and
layup made it a five-point game again.
Carr then connected from the top of
the key to cut it back to three.
Thomas' drive and score put Mis
souri up by five again before the Huskers
scored the next six points, with two
each from Hoppen and Carr, and then
Clouds go ahead basket.
After Thomas scored on the next
Missouri possession, Estes hit both
ends of a one-and-one before Thomas
scored again on a drive. He followed
that with a free throw Lfter a John
Matzke foul
Matzke and Cloudy hit 18-footcrs to
keep Nebraska within reach at 46-44
with 1:54 left. But the Tigers passed
the ball around for the next 1:14 before
Hoppen picked up his filth fouL Cav
ener hit the free throws, but a Cloudy
basket got Nebraska back within two
with 29 seconds left Cloudy then picked
up his fifth foul 22 seconds later, send
ing Jones to the line. After the Tiger
senior hit both, Brian Carr hit a mean
ingless 25-footer to close the scoring.
Iba said the Husker players were
told to foul only Thomas, a 59 percent
free throw shooter, in the closing
moments.
Thomas and Cavener finished with
19 and 17 points respectively to lead
Missouri. Carr and Hoppen had 12
each to lead Nebraska, while Cloudy
had 10, all in the second half. Overall,
Nebraska outshot Missouri, 52 percent
to 43 percent, but were out-rebounded
25-22.
The Huskers will travel to Lawrence,
Kan., Wednesday to meet the Jayhawks.
