Friday, January 20, 1934 Daily Nebrsskan Tiger basketball star shoots for high goals By Ward V. Triplet III Missouri forward Joni Davis will reluctantly tell you that she went into the 1933-84 season with hopes of ending it as an AU-American. Tve got all kinds of p.oals set up for myself," the 6-foot junior said. "I'd like to get All-American, or All-American honorable mention at least, and I would like our team to get into the final four. But I don't talk about those a lot because they are pretty high." But once in the court, Davis' play clearly indicates that she could end up on someone's All-American list. Her 19.9 point per game scoring average is the best on the 12-2 Missouri team that was ranked 11th in the nation at the start of the week. Davis leads the Tigers in scoring, while averaging 6.4 rebounds per game. A starter since midway through her freshman season, Davis took over as the leader of the Tiger offense after Lorraine Ferret, a 6-1 center, graduated. "WeVe changed. We don't have a dominating cen ter anymore," Davis said. "We've become more effec tive since any one of us can look for the shot now, and the other team doesn't have that key person to concentrate on." As a result, the Tigers have demolished most of their opponents. The scores include 1 10-47 against Northern Iowa, 102-G9 against Southwest Missouri, 96-36 against Wyoming and 85-65 against Indiana. The Tigers also buried 20th-ranked Florida State 83-66 in the Miami Masonic Classic, and their two losses have been by identical 81-79 scores to 13th ranked Stephen F. Austin and Southern Cal, which was top ranked at the time. Continued on Page 8 s i , Si ' Vv : i.
