Continued fioa P 20 For Schnellenberger, being an assistant on that undefeated Super Bowl championship team was not nearly as thrilling as leading his Hurricanes to the Orange Bowl with a national championship on the line. "Going 1 7-0 was really exciting, but I was only part of the whole pictureTie said. After the first stint with the Dolphins, Schnellen berger got his first head coaching job with Baltimore in 1973. He didnt prove too successful in his time with the Colts, and he puts the blame on his lack of controL Pro football organizations are sometimes too reliant on the abilities of the front offices, Schnel lenberger said, and that takes too much responsibil ity from the coaches. So Schnellenberger went back to Miami and his friend, Don Shula. But Schnellenberger wasn't satis fied with returning to an assistantship. When Lou Saban stepped down as head coach of the Hurri canes, Schnellenberger was the school's first choice to replace him. Schnellenberger didn't meet with immediate suc cess at Miami, but his first team did post a victory at Penn State on its way to a 5-6 season. Schnellenberger took the Hurricanes to the Peach Bowl in 1980 when they finished 9-3. The team was saddled with an NCAA probation the next year, and despite finishing with nine wins in 1 1 games, couldnt go bowling. But that has changed with the organization of the new men's volleyball club. "I jumped in the water by myself" player-coach Barry Janzen said. "I knew people who wanted to play." Janzen, the women's assistant coach, said 32 people have signed up to play, which allowed him to form three teams for city recreation com petition. Two of the teams will be sanctioned by the United States Volley ball Association. Other than city-rec, Nebraska will be trying to schedule games with clubs from the University of Kansas and Brigham Young University. Janzen said he is looking to play schools with NCAA and NAIA programs. He said in one or two years there might be a possibility of playing such teams as Graceland University of Lamona, Iowa; Ohio State and Ball State. Within four or five years, J anzen hopes he can bring in teams from the West Coast. "We would have to catch them heading somewhere else but there is a possibility," he said. Players include two members from Acacia Fraternity, the Fraternity A championship team, two from Alph3 Tau Omega, two from Lambda Chi Alpha, and others from various in dependent teams. Former Husker basket ball player Greg Downing and former Nebraska punter Grant Campbell are also members of the team. "We have a team of some quality, and most of the guys have played some type of structured volleyball," Janzen said. "We need to find people who jump well, and are interested in-the sport. We havgn't had any difficulty getting started or getting the players trained." - "I love to play volleyball, and I want to play more than house intramural volleyball," treasurer Jeff Iverson said. Iverson is in charge of collecting $15 from each individual to cover the city rec fees. The club has asked for money from the Campus Activities & Programs of fice, and next year Iverson said they will request money from the university recreation department. The money from the CAP office will be used to cover tournament entry fees, Iverson said. "It would be great if we got the money, but it doesn't bother me too much," Iverson said, referring to paying to play. Janzen said he hopes to create the interest in men's volleyball that can be seen at Brigham Young, where approxi mately 8,000 people will attend a match. The future of the men's volley ball club depends on a couple of things, Janzen said. , "We need to create an interest in the sport; it can go a long ways," Janzen said. "It involves practice time and the recruiting of good athletes. We need volleyball players to come here and play."
