LINCOLN SCHOOL OF COMMERCE Day Classes Reagan blunders provide good target for critical authors "Eonald Realm's Reign of Error" By Mark Green and Gail MacColl Pantheon ($4.95) This book is an in teresting combination of elements. On the one hand, it is a telling critique of Ronald Reagan's thousand days in office. Instead of contriving and ideol ogical paradigm from which to criticize the president's policies, the authors (primarily Mark Green for reasons to be explained later) use Reagan's own words to set up the criticism. On the other hand, the book was co-written, or more accurately edited, by Gail MacColl, who also was responsible for putting together "The Official Preppy Hand book." Clearly the authors have attempted to make political indictments. And the point raised is important: The current president of the United States has a tendency to say things which are un true and which con tradict with statements he has previously made. While one must admire the authors' gallant ef fort, the book ultimately must be judged a failure. Maybe I'm a cynic, but I can't imagine the Muffy crowd being overly im pressed by the crigque of Reagan. Sure, the .presi dent is unaware, incon sistent and ill-informed. Then again,. so are the Muffles. It is unfortunate the authors (although I'm guessing most of the writing is Green's, while the layout was MacColl's jurisdiction) have chos en to appeal to the lowest common denominator. As they show, there is clearly something awry with Reagan's thought process. One of the book's most amusing, yet frightening moments is an excerpt from an "Issues and Answers" telecast where Reagan tries to deny he made a statement regarding a 30 percent tax cut Presi dent Kennedy allegedly made. After being told there was not such cut, the president 'denied ever making the state ment. The interviewer then points out a news paper ad for Reagan's campaign he had seen that week discussing the tax cut. Reagan then claims he can't be ex pected to account for everything he says. Frightening. "Reign of Error" is a witty and provocative look at Reagan's long history of blunders. However, because of its fluffy format, I'm afraid it will be overlooked by any one who isn't already sus picious of the president. Too bad.
