A little under the weather?
Miami fun, sun a cure-all
Cornhuskcr fans migrating southeast
for the Orange Bowl can partake in a
number of prc-game activities.
Got those 3 feet of snow and my car's
stalled winter blahs? Well, Stacy Mor
gan, information officer at the Miami
Tourist Office, said Miami beaches,
most open to the' public, are a sure
cure to whatever ails you.
If a tourist gets tired of lounging
around on the beaches (heaven for
bid), they can venture a peek at some
of Miami's animal and historical
exhibits.
The Seaquarium features various
marine animals like whales, sea lions
and dolphins. Visits cost $7 for adults,
and $3.50 for children.
The Parrot Jungle contains thou
sands of birds besides parrots. Fla
mingos, cockatoos and parrots per
form tricks and pose for pictures with
tourists. The Jungle also features land
scaped gardens. The cost is $6 for
adults, $3 for children.
Not your typical zoo, the Metro,
which was built two years ago, has
animals which are not in cages, but
separated from zoo visitors by moats,
much like the San Diego Zoo. The zoo is
home for the rare white tiger and has
bird shows that feature hawks retriev
ing items from their trainer. Tourists
can either ride the monorail train
through the zoo or walk. The cost is
$ 1.50 for adults, $2.C0 for children.
The Coral Castle, which costs $4 for
adults to view and $1 for children, is a
structure built entirely out of coral
Fairchild Tropical Garden is the larg
est tropical garden in the United States.
The cost is $3 for adults, children
under 13 are admitted free.
The Miccosukee Indian Festival will
be Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. It features
different arts and crafts, alligator wres
tling and ethnic Indian foods. The Mic
cosukee was one of the first tribes to
settle in the Miami area.
Vizcaya is an Italian-style villa which
was built when Miami was established.
It features antique furnishings and art
collections. The cost is $4.50 for adults.
Children under 6 are admitted for
$2.50.
Other attractions are the Monkey
Jungle; the International Orchid Jun
gle; the Planet Ocean, with marine
exhibits; and the Serpentarium, with
snakes, alligators, turtles, lizards and a
demonstration on how to extract snake
venom.
Miami also boasts the Spanish Mon
astery, the oldest standing structure of
its kind in the Western Hemisphere.
Built in Spain during the 1400s, the
monastery was brought to America
and reconstructed in the 1950s by
Randolph Hearst.
Tourists also can visit the Venetian
Pool, a swimming hole with real spring
water.
