Students travel to Ecuador,
Mexico during winter brealc
The UNL Office of Campus Recreation will take r
two teams of UNL and UNO nature lovers far from :
the frozen Midwest during the upcoming break.
One team composed of a leader end six students
will travel to the Tungurahua Volcano la Ecuador.'
Another team will study the Copper Canyon, Bar
ranca Del Ccbre, In Mexico. Thb 19-member team H "
a combination of students, staff and faculty. . -
Mark Ebel, assistant director and coordinator of
outdoor recreation, said the Mexico trip has been an -annual
visit since 1975, and the third trip to
Ecuador. -
The Mexico trip, Dec 26 to Jaiu 14, will be mainly
hiking and backpacking. The Ecuador expedition,
Dec 25 to Jan. 17, includes three activities: climbing
the volcano, canoeing in a jungle region and a visit to
the Galapogos Islands.

scheduled to speak to the graduates.
James A. Rawley, UNL history professor, will
speak at the ceremonies. He will discuss the Morrill
Act, providing a view of the land grant act from the
.university's pcrspecttver- ..
Berger said Rawley was selected because he was a
recent recipient of the University's Outstanding
Research and Creative Activity Award. He also is
regarded as one of the leading 10th century Ameri
can historians and has authored many such books
as "The Politics of Union" and The Transatlantic
Slave Trade: A History" :-

Syrians fire at jets;
U.S. ships respond

since Dec. 4, when Syria shot down two Navy
Jets on a bombing raid against Syrian positions.
The pilot of one of the planes was killed and his
navigator-bombardier was captured.
In Damascus, a military spokesman said the
Americans had started the shooting Tuesday.

Israeli gunboats off Lebanon also went into
action Tuesday, attacking Palestinian positions
near Tripoli. In Tel Aviv, a military spokesman
said Israeli gunboats hit PLO positions and
that the Palestinians fired back. z
Drunken driving decried
WASHINGTON ;A presidential commis
sion Tuesday called for a vigorous national
campaign against drunken drivers, who have
caused an estimated 250,000 traffic deaths
during the past 10 years. President Reagan,
upon receiving the report, called drunken driv
ing "a crime to be stopped." Among measures
recommended by the commission are banning
the consumption of alcohol in cars, prohibiting
- people under 21 from baying or possessing
liquor and a vigorous public education cam
paign aimed at youths. :
Laws dealing with drunken drivers vary
' from state to state, and the federal govern
" ment has no enforcement authority except to
- withhold funds for highway construction and
maintenance if federal regulations are not

November retail sales up
- WASHINGTON In a pre-Chiistmas rush,
buyers pushed retail sales up 1.0 percent in
. November, the eighth increase in the past nine

merce Department said Tuesday.
"Retailers are enjoying the merriest holiday
selling season in many years," Commerce Sec
