Winter Dance excites, satisfies
By Vlcki Grossenbnchcr
This weekend's Orchesis Winter Dance concert
was the best I have seen in several years. The even
ing was filled with a variety of styles, all original and
of the highest quality. There were many highlights,
including "Wham Jam," "Lavender Dreams," "Street
Dance," "Pace" and the closing number,
"Movaldi-Vivaldi."

"Lincoln's Corner on Hairstyling"
The action-packed mode of "Wham Jam," trr
opening group choreography, lived up to its name
indeed. The dancers with their colorful conven
tional street clothes moved with precision, compli
menting the music of the British pop group Wham
U.K. An element of surprise was prevalent
throughout.
Jeanne Finnigan and Bob Kamp displayed elo
quence and sensitivity in their dance, "Lavender
Dreams." The guitar piece "Remedios" com
plimented the mood of the dancers. Coral and
lavender bodies formed beautiful sculptures. The
excitement of bodily connection conveyed by the
two dancers kept the audience breathless.
"Pace" opened the second half of the concert.
Harry Partch's percussive bells accompanied Mar
rian Ariyanto's choreography of high energy run
ning and leaping variations. Interesting shadow
dances and echoing movement produced the unex
pected. Dancers fed off each other's energy, creating
a domino-like effect. Dynamic group polarity
prevailed.
Richard Harris' choreography of "Street Dance"
flowed with natural, free, vibrating movements. His
exquisite movements in "Ain't Nobody, Rockit and

Fascination" were executed with precision, strength
and control. Three boys entered wearing punk
shades and Italian biking hats, adding a refreshing
air of comradery. Each presented his own
solo variation on the theme.' Slithering movements
of arms and bodies at varied levels and relationships
culminated Harris clever ingenuity.
"Movaldi-Vivaldi" moved vividly as the closing
piece. Teresa Fields' senior performance created a
Renaissance tone in costume, music and movement
Lighting complimented the rose-colored costumes.
With varied levels and directions painting the entire
stage, the dancers whisped precisely with airy
articulations. Quick entrances and exits kept the
excitement sustained on stage, maintaining
audience arousal. The choreography was consist
ent, will full group interaction breaking into repeti
tive trios and solos.
, "Movaldi-Vivaldi" revealed Fields intellectual
awareness of all the essential elements of dance
production. The playfull attitude of this piece never
yielded a dull moment
The performance conveyed an amalgam of Doris
Humphrey-Charles Weidman modern dance tech
niques, as seen in that famous Weidman leap, exe
cuted so well throughout Also note-worthy were the
modern jazz movement of "Jazz Suite," the rapidly
tapping feet of Sandy Kopecky's "On Your Toes," and
the black magic of "Synchro System."
