Daily Ncbrcskan Wednesday, November 23, 1C33 Pcgo 10 Svvitzer: Sooner defense coul cause problems for Nebraska By Jim Easnuisen Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said Tuesday that his Sooners will have to put forth their best effort of the year if they expect to have a chance against top-ranked Nebraska Saturday. The Sooners, ranked 16th this week in the United Press International poll, can share the Big Eight title by beating the Huskers in the 2:50 p.m. nationally televised game at Norman. "Oklahoma's not going to have much of a chance unless we play the best we have all season ," Switzer said. "We're going to have to score some points, because you know Nebraska's going to score some." Switzer said he thinks Oklahoma's nationally ranked defense will cause some problems for the Cornhuskers' potent offense. "Well make 'em punt some," Switzer said. "But I don't think we can totally stop them. No one's been able to do that all year." . The Sooner defense, led by All:American tackle Rick Bryan, is ranked fifth in the nation in rushing . defense, giving up an average of 9 1 .3 yards per game. They are also fifth nationally in total defense, giving up 260.9 yards per game. Match those statistics with : those of the Nebraska offense (404.9 rushing; 557.8 total offense), and you know something's got to give. Bryan, who will be playing his last home game as a Sooner, said he thinks his team can give the Huskers a good game. "We aren't going to shut them down completely, but if we play hard and do the best we can, I think we can slow them down enough to give us a chance," he said. For Oklahoma to have a chance, Switzer said the , Sooner offense must produce. Oklahoma's running game is potent as usual this season, despite the departure of Marcus Dupree. Two redshirt fresh men, Earl Johnson and Spencer Tillman, have filled the gap left by Dupree. Johnson and Tillman have rushed for 1 ,593 yards combined, while junior quar terback Danny Bradley has added 350 rushing yards of his own. Bradley also has thrown for 822 yards, completing 51 of 123 passes. ' Despite a respectable 7-3 record, Oklahoma will nct.be going to a bowl game this year regardless of what happens against Nebraska. They will close out their season at Hawaii on Dec. 3. "We had to turn down some bowl offers this year," s Switzer said. "We could have gone to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, which would have been a good trip for us. And we were invited to the Holiday Bowl, but had to decline. Our final exams are the week of Dec. 17 through Dec. 23, and both those bowls fall around those dates, so we just couldnt go." Holiday gives wrestlers 2 chances to bounce back after Sunday's loss ByJeHKorbelik After a disappointing 41-5 loss to Oklahoma State Sunday, the sixth-ranked Nebraska wrestling team will travel to Omaha tonight to face UNO. and Sat urday will meet defending Pacific 10 champion Oregon State in Lincoln. Coach Bob Fehrs said he didn't know how the Oklahoma State drubbing will affect the team's per formance this week. "It was the worst performance by a Nebraska wrestling team in the last four years, and the worst since my first year here," Fehrs said. "I don't really have any explanation. "I'm hoping the bad match will turn into a positive influence, and I hope we will be more intense and emotional," he said. UNO will have some unfamiliar faces to Fehrs, and he is expecting a tough dual from them. . "To them, this is a really big meet," he said. "They like to be as good as or better bs their big brother to the west, and if we dont get fired up, it will be a tough match." - Lost for Wednesday's 7 p.m. match are 126 pounder Gil Sanchez and 118-pounder Matt Camp bell Sanchez injured his elbow at Oklahoma State, and Campbell missed the dual with a strained ankle. Fehrs said he doesn't know whether either wrestler will compete in Saturday's duaL j - Bill Scherr, a l0-punder who wrestled with a broken jaw, was pinned by Oklahoma State's Karl Lynes. Fehrs said the jaw may have had some effect in the top-ranked Scherrs' loss to the fifth-ranked Lynes, but added that 'his whole team was not "there" Sunday, "'. " ' " .. Regardless of injury, Scherr will face Oregon State All-American Jim Baumgardner in the top single match Saturday. Baumgardner accumulated a record of 52-6 last year one of those losses coming from Scherr in the NCAA tournament. Baumgardner fin ished fourth in the NCAA finals. Oregon State finished 22nd at the NCAA cham pionships last year, compared with Nebraska's sixth place finish. Fehrs said this b no indication of how the Beavers will perform against the Huskers. Fehrs :i said Oregon State may be a better dual team than a tournament team. 112 czli Nebraska is a better tournament team because it has five or six wrestlers who do well in tournament competiton to accumu late points. ' ' -- Nebraska will be the third stop on an extensive Oregon State road schedule. They pen the season Thursday at Cemson, then bus to Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Pennsylvania during a 10-day trip. - ; "The travel will have a detriments! cfTect cn the " team, and by the end of the tr:i they racy bezr:pped. But I dont know how they w.J be when they reach ' us," Fehrs said. The dual will take place tt the track area of the Bab Devaaey Sports Center, t : ginning at 7 p.m. '. ;. .. Huskers open season with Hill at the helm DyJcff Browne ' Nebraska's women's basketball team open3 ! its season Friday against South Florida in the Nebraska. Invitational and first-year coach Kelly Hill will attack the first Husker oppo nents with a pressing and running game. The Cornhuskers have no starters taller than 5-1 1, so Hill said she will have to rely on speed and defense in the tournament. "We have to press all over the court," Hill said. "Just about everybody on our team can handle the ball well, so we're going to try to push the ball up the court on offense, too." Hill said the other teams in the Husker Invi tational are relatively short, and that her team should match up fairly well South Florida, from Tampa, starts a 6-2 cen ' ter in freshman Cheryl Williams, but the rest of . the team to fairly short, Hill said. Hill is uncertain who will start at guard for Nebraska against South Florida, but the rest of the lineup is set . Debra Powell and Terri Parriott, a pair of juniors, will start at forward for the Huskers while freshman Angle Miller from Clatonia will start at center. .. ;; Miller is only 5-10, but Hill isnt worried about her ability to play the pest. "Angie is a center," Hill said, "She knows how to post up. Hill is undecided about who will start at guard. She will either go with sophomore Jac quie Shackelford and junior Crystal Coleraaa or replace either of those two with senior Kelii Benson... --. : ..' "We've got some depth," Hill said. TThat's the reason why we're not completely set. We've got eight or nine players who are fairly equal. It isnt going to make a heck of a lot cf difference who we play." . " Hill isn't sure how good the teams in the Husker Invitational are because it h still so early in the season. But, she said, she expects a competitive two days at Bob Devaney Sports Center.' - "Couth Florida was trying to recruit Ar."iz (MUIsr) the same tizte we were," Hill said. Tra not too familiar with Fullerton State I know they are in a tough conference, and Central Michigan made it to the NCAA tournament last year Fullerton State and Centre! Michigan play Friday at 6 p.m. and Nebraska will talis on South Florida immediately afterwards. - ' ; The losers of those two games will play Sat urday at 3 p.m. for third place, and the cham pionship game will follow that.
