The Romantics reach
into the very guts of the
genre on thi3, this third
album. Deatlesesque
melodies lurk in the

trade off the vocal

Television
Mickey Rooney won an Emmy award for his
portrayal of William Sackter, a mentally retarded
Iowa City man who won freedom from an institu
tion after 44 years. Tonight, Rooney reprises his role.
"Bill: On His Own" (8 p.m., channels 6 and 10) exam
ines Sackter's life after leaving the institution.
Radio
"Unique Beat," which airs at 7:30 p.m. on KZUM
(89.5 FM) is a delightful mix of jazz and soul music,
with Wayne Cramm as host. It's a shame the type of
music in this program has so few outlets in Lincoln.

Mr. . . . : Well, yeah . . Just about ... I
got a few irons in the fire. I'm getting
some new fakes from some grad stu
dents this week. Now all I need is a
buyer for some Diebenkorns.
. Dealer: What? Yell a little louder.
Mr, . . . : I said ... oh, forget it.
There are nearly three hours of con-:
versation similar to those above, more
lurid details in creepy inns and
crowded bars. Obviously, the scheme
ran into several sna3. These included:
1. the current lackluster market for
lGth century American art, 2. a grad
student-forger willing to turn state's
evidence in exchange for a studio in
Richard's Hall, 3. the noise level at P.O.
Pears and, 4. the discovery that a
Francis Bacon painting on display was
actually signed "R. Ross." , . : : .
This reporter is currently negotiat

man of morals, I will refuse any
amount less than what the former
gallery director has offered. -

social and emotional

r Khayyat said IES is
"one of the most impor

international students."
He said he would support
consolidation of the pro
gram only if it would
make IES more efficient
He said smaller office
space, less accessibility
2nd decreased efficiency
could cause internatio
nal students to go to
school elsewhere.
"The international pre

N While international stu
dents can find support
from IES, other students
rely on the Counseling
Center for similar assist
ance. Matt Wallace said
the academic, social and
emotional help provided
by the counseling center
is instrumental to retain
ing students at UNL He
said retention and re
cruitment are both uni
versity priorities and the
budget cut proposals pit
recruitment against retention.
"It's
a
false commit
ment' to bring people
here and not satisfy their
needs," Wallace said.
"When you talk about re
cruiting, there is nothing
better than a satisfied
graduate from this uni
versity." Vernon Williams, an edu
cational psychology and
social foundations pro
fessor who directs the
Counseling Center, said
the current proposed
cuts would be deteri
mental to the center's
program. He said cuts
would mean an in
creased workload and re
sult in decreased service
Some of these services
are career development,
study help and aid to
freshmen at risk.
The Academic Plan
ning Committee today
continues its hearing to
review budget proposals
for UNL's 2 percent
budget reallocation.
