Husker gymnasts dominate invitational
Monday, November 7, 1C33
The Nebraska men's Dramatics team ben this
etzson the sine wcy they finished the krt one on
top. T1.3 Ccmhuslicnj, the dt'tnCln NCAA cham
pions, defeated five other teams In the Biz Eiht Invi
tatlonal at the Dob Devaney. Sports Center
Saturday. ..
Nebraska ran away from second-place Southern
Illinois, 278.55-273.50. Iowa State finished third
(270.0), followed by Iowa (264.15), Oklahoma
(263.65) and Northern Illinois (253.35).
Husker coach Francis' Allen said he was delighted
with the meet's results.
"We scored 273," Allen said. "Ideally 230 would .
have been our maximum for the opening meet of the
year. I thought through our intrasquad meets that
we'd be good, but not this good"
Nebraska trailed Southern Illinois and Iowa State
midway through the competition,' but rallied Li
front of a home crowd of 1,400 to win the
invitational.
"You won't see too many meets where we're
. behind halfway through the meet," Allen said. "That
just fired our guys up."
A turning point for the Huskers was the parallel
bars. Nebraska swept the event, claiming the top five
places. ( .,.
Sophomore Chris Riesel placed first with a 0.6.
Eiegel, who is recovering from wrist surgery this
summer, performed solidly with the exception of a
fall on the pommel horse.
"He's like all the good ones Allen said of RiegeL
"When you turn on the lights and bring out the -crowd,
he's ready to compete."
Other first-place finishers for the Huskers were
Wes Suter on the high bar (9.7) and Jim Mikus on
the vault (9.63).
Mike Bowers put in a sterling performance on the
pommel horse. Bowers ad-libbed his entire routine
for a 9.4 ,;v ... , .,
"I called him Jim Hartung, because only Jim Har
tun, NCAA all-around champion and Husker
graduate assistant) can do that," Allen said, refer
ring to Bowers' ad-libbing. "That's really coming into
your own when you can do that"
Allen also praised the work of Brandon Hull and
Neil Palmer. '. .
4 "Brandon Hull did a tremendous job tonight He
scored well on the floor exercise and still rings and
that was the first time he's competed in those events
in his collegiate life. You're going to be hearing from
Neil Palmer, too. He came through with some good
routines tonight"
The Huskers recorded only four scores under 9.0
In the invitational. That, Allen said, is a sign of Just
how ready Nebraska was. .
"The guys know what it takes and they gave it to
win tonight," Allen said.
