Gymnasts begin season,
look toward sixth title
The three gymnastics teams in the Big Eight begin
their season tonight at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen
ter in the B?3 Eight Invitational The meet, which
opens the 1CU3-04 collegiate gymnastics season, will
feature Iowa State, Oklahoma End Nebraska.
Nebraska coach Francis Men, who has led the
Iluskers to five, consecutive national champion
ships, hopes to use the meet as a springboard for a
sixth title.
"The Big Eight is usually the powerhouse in the
nation. This is the first meet of the year, so it gets us
off to an early dart," Allen said. "A win here will
reci$ start us off right."
Allen said Nebraska's chief competition should
come from the Cyclones.
Iowa State is really going to challenge us. They
finished fourth in nationals last year, but I think
they were probably the second best team on the
floor."
Oklahoma coach Gary Buwick said he thinks the
Sooners can adequately compete with Nebraska
and Iowa State.
"WeVe got a lot of talent, but not a lot of depth,"
Buwick said. "I think well be fine as long as no one
gets hurt. Any injury will really hurt our score."
Both Allen and Buwick said that pre-invitational
tension on their teams is high.
"You never know how the teams are going to do
until its over," Allen said. "It's a very stimulating and
motivating time for the coaches and the gymnasts."
Allen said the Huskers have a good chance at
repeating as national champions.
This is going to be a really exciting year. Right
now we dont have a Jim Hartung, a Phil Cahoy or a
Scotty Johnson, but well have an individual step
forward by the end of the year," Allen said.
Nebraska i3 led by all-arounders Chris Riegel, Jim
Mikus, Mike Bowers, Wes Suter and Neal Palmer.
"They're the strength of the team," Allen said. "The
combination of those five is probably the best m the
country."
Riegel, Nebraska's top returning all-arounder, is
currently recovering from wrist surgery he had this
summer.
f The surgery has limited his practice time, and
according to a story in Thursday's Omaha World
Herald, had caused a falling out of sorts between
Riegel and Allen.
"I don't think there's any problem," Allen said. "I
think they (the Omaha World-Herald) blew every
thing out of proportion. I don't have any special
problems with Chris."
Riegel and Allen both felt that the story stemmed
from the injury. -
"It's pretty frustrating," Riegel said of the injury:
"It's made me question myself on whether or not I
want to continue with this stuff (gymnastics). But I
' dont have any problems with coach Allen."
Specialists for the Huskers will include Brandon
Hull (floor, parallel bars, : still rfcgs and vault) and
Frank Nlbbits (pommel hcrre). -
'. Allen sold that Nebraska has a potential great
team. . . , :
"We're going to be resS powerful. We're strong in
a lot of areas and I think a few of our gymnasts will
come into their own," AEon said "Our only major
problem b our youth. WeVe really get a young team."
The invitational will run through Saturday.
Events begin at 7 p.m. each day.
