In "Risky Business" he was an upper middle-class jun ior achiever who was desperate to get accepted into Princeton. As Steph, in "All the Rfcht Moves" he has joined the ranks of the working class as a high school football player hoping to get a college scho larship so that he can become an engineer. Several times Steph tells his family and friends from the steel mill community of Ampipe, Pa., "I gotta get outta this townP As I was eating my pop- Film Review corn I thought, I gotta get outta this theater" but thi3 review had to be written. Not surprisingly, it Is hard for Steph to make all the right moves. At one point he fumbles with his coach and girlfriend. But he recovers the ball, so to speak, and the film ends with a song called "Blue Skies Forever." Goodbye to those dreary, gray sides of Ainpipe. Kello, suburbian bliss! Director Michael Chapman and screenwriter Michael Kane were not as inept as one may think. Theyjust wanted to make all the right moves so that they could attract a large audience without offend ing too many critics. . Tom Crux's beefcake appeal will undoubtedly generate a healthy profit the fact that his friends look like regular teenagers will probably impress some critics. Several blackseven appear on screen. Furthermore, one black couple (a football player and a cheerleader) is stuck with the burden of emu lating a white, patriarchal relationship. They are supposed to represent the "progress" that blacks are making in our society. Some reminder. Steph and his girlfriend, Lisa, have a more mod ern relationship. She serenades him with her horn outside of his house. Since Mom is dead and Dad is working the shift, Steph is able to consumate his passion in his bedroom instead of the front seat of Lisa's car. How convenient. For the past several years, "Rocky" and its sequels have preached the merits of individualism to the working class. "Independence Day" put forth a sim ilar Horatio Alger message with a superficial femi nist twist. And now "All the Right Moves" end3 up sanctifying football for similar reasons. But those involved in the making of this film ignore the limited prospects that this sport oilers to those who are ultimately exploited for the pleasure of spectators and avaricious athletic directors. True, Steph alludes to some of these unpleasant matters, but that was when he was eating sour grapes, thinking that he would never receive a scholarship. : v Some may praise this movie for its entertainment value, yet it is quite depressing. One cannot help but wonder about the fate of the scholarship recipients given the fact that many college football players end up with a poor education and hardly any chance to play in the professional leagues. And what about the people of Ampipe? They are seen as a lost cause just because they are unable or unwilling to leave their community. This conclusion is an unfortunate example of ideological manipula tion since no society can function without its pro letariat. Anyone who is truly interested in the work ing Class would consider political options which might improve their material and cultural con ditions. v': ''.; ' -y In the end "All the Right Moves" is another setback for the ' advancement of working-class conscious'' -, ness.'-.--' ' --; ' ' ': uos cqms servea EVERY THURSDAY 6-9 pm.
