Television
If preliminary indications are any sin, the most
thoughtful and inventive programs this season will
be found on PBS. One of the network's most ac
claimed series this year is the 13-part documentary
Vietnam: A Television History."
The documentary airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on
channel 12. Tonight's installment, "LBJ Goes to
War," deals with the escalation of the conflict in
1854 and 1985.
Radio
KUCB (90.9 FM) All regular evening programming
is being pre-empted this week in order to present
the Beethoven Bash, one of two annual fund-raising
events for the listener-supported station. The festi
val, which features a combination of financial
appeals and recorded classical music, runs through
Sunday. But fret not, NPR's popular "All Things Con
sidered" will still be heard at 5 p.m. daily through
Thursday.
Homecoming

comedians and musicians. For those who missed
that era of performing, three student musicians

giving a performance in the Nebraska Union Crib at
2 p.m. today.
At the Sheldon

Two bands, The Waitresses and Tracterz per
formed in the Nebraska Union Sunday night to start
Homecoming Week with a big bang.
Tracterz, a five-piece band, put on a high energy
performance which included recent hits from
groups such as the B-52s and Missing Persons. Their
cover son3 were excellent but they also sprinkled
their performance with some of their own song3.
They did some old song3, too, but with a new-
wavish twist
Patty Donahue, lead singer of the Waitresses, was
the star of the show. She and the four other group
members performed songs from their new album,
Bruiseoiogy, as well as their first LP, Wasn t Tomor
row Wonderful?
One of their encore songs was last year's seasonal
hit, "Christmas Wrapping," which was well received
by the crowd. They also performed their new single,
"Make the Weather."
The Waitresses came to Lincoln as part of their
national tour to promote Bruiseology. They were a
refreshing change from other groups who usually
Chamber orchestra delights Lincoln
Eeview by Check Jcoda
The Paillard Chamber Orchestra treated Lincoln
to a 300-year trip back in music history on Sunday
night. The orchestra, founded and hand-picked by
French conductor and musicologist Jean-Francois
Paillard in 1 953, played works from the 1 7th to 20th
centuries at Kimball Recital HalL
The 13-member ensemble plays a series of 30 con
certs a year, subsidized by the French government,
and performs in more than 70 festivals and concert
halls in Europe, America and Asia.
A chamber orchestra is smaller than a full orches
tra. Beige flats with partial roofs enclosed the Pail
lard in an appropriately intimate space on the Kim
ball stage.
"French Suite in G Minor," by Jean-Baptiste Lully
featured the clavichord (a piano-like instrument)
and included some quite danceable baroque pas
sages, but was not nearly so lively as the Jean Joseph
Mouret piece, "Premiere suite de Simphonies in D
Major," featuring Guy Touvron as piccolo trumpet
soloist.

stop in Lincoln. They not only made the crowd
enthusiastic, but created a level of energy that
lasted through the entire concert.
Pity those who missed the concert. Both Tracterz
and The Waitresses put on an unforgettable show.
Tracterz will be performing at Little Bo's later this
week.
When Touvron sounded the first notes of the alle
gro, a warm chuckle for the theme music of PES'
Masterpiece Theater spread through the audience.
The chuckle began a flirtation that became a full
flowered love affair between the Kimball crowd and
the Dudley Moore-like imp on stage.
"Concert Pieces for Cello and Orchestra," by Fran
cois Couperin featured Carlos Dourthe as cello solo
ist The piece was a decided change of pace and
offered a number of maudlin, almost dirge-like
passages.
The Richard Strauss "Capriccio for String Orches
tra" was predictably full of waltz music and pres
ented Gerald Jarry as violin soloist for the long and
ponderous piece.
Touvron returned for "Sonata for Trumpet and
Strings," by Georg-Philip Telemann. He was, if possi
ble, even more responsive to the music than in his
first appearance. The audience showed their appre
ciation by calling him back for four encores, a con
siderable number even for the Paillard which takes
a curtain call after each piece.
After the fourth encore, Touvron played some
phrases from Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" on the
trumpet and wa3 called back for yet another bow.
