U.N. spokesman: System
of apartheid must go

The United Nations considers South Africa's sys
tem of epsrtheid a "crime e-oinst humanity," a U.N.
spokesman said Friday.
Abdennotir Abrous, chief of the United Nations
Center Against Apartheid, spoke in the Nebraska'.
Union about UN. condemnation of and policies
e gainst South Africa's system of strict racial segre
gation. The system is the only system of institutional
discrimination in the world, he said. - .
Hie United Nations has been following the situa
tion in Couth Africa since 1946, Abrous said. Its first
approach to the problem was to work with South
African leaders to try to convince them the system
was wrong, he said, adding that this had no effect In
1CG0, the United Nations bejan advocating the eco
nomic, social and cultural isolation of South Africa,
Abrcu3 said.
This policy of isolation is still followed, and aHU.N.
members are encouraged to participate, he said.-
