The new equipment includes a VAX 1 1780 mini-, computer and approximately 45 new terminals,, manufactured" by the Digital Equipment Corpora tion. Two additional terminal rooms have been established to accommodate the new terminals. 'Thirds have really started to happen in the last six to eiht months," Computer Science Department Chairman Roy Keller said. Ferguson's new system is "truly interactive," he said. "It just makes things better, simpler, easier. You can really do the things you want" The VAX system is designed to accommodate undergraduate instructional activity, allaviatin soma of the academic computing load from the University cf Nebraska Computing Services. However, Keller said some classwork still will require options availa ble only from Computing Services' about seven ter minals will remain hooked up to system for such purposes. Computer science faculty and graduate students are now learning about the r.r,v tcrminab so they can teach students how to vlz a them. "The con versation is hectic," Keller said. ". . .but it's going to make life a lot better. He said he anticipates that in about a month the system will be running as expected, and installation of terminals in computer science faculty offices will be completed. ' The total cost,' including the purchase of micro (personal) computers and about 50 new terminal was about $750,000, he said. The additional termi nals, located in Bancroft Hall, Nebraska Hall and the College of Business Administration, are tied into Computing Services facilities. - Vice Chancellor Earl Freise said the money for the project came from the University Foundation, energy savings and other funds. Freise said with the installation of a minicompu ter, Remote 2 no longer is a remojte entry site for the Nebraska University Remote Operating System, a system used by Computing Services. He said as of Sept. SO, students will not be permitted free open access on NURQ3. Instead, Controversial Monitor System will be available to students at no charge. CMS, as an interactive system, eliminates most res trictions on the size of a given program and is sup posedly easier to use, because it performs a job as tha types it in and responds immediately. Freise also said NUROS will be phased out by the; end cf this fiscal year becausa it's outdated and unab.a to sustain the heavy load placed on it by cmie ana administrative computer use.
