Cra!;J Johnson end Lliml Madera are
UNL varclty tennis pliers, but tha two
have mors la common c!T the court
than they do cn.
Johnson, a Junior who wa the Corn
buskers' No. I smej player last year,
is a strong serve and vc-IIcyer who lil;c3
to attack. . .
Madiera, the only senior on the
women's team, h a steady baseline
player who would rather slu it out
from the backcourt than charge the
net
This season, each b working on the
other's strengths. ifa'era said she
wants to develop a much better net
gone, and Johnson's goal b to improve
his play from the baseline.
t
Men's tennis coach Kerry
McDermott said he beHevc3 most of
Johnson's improvement will come
from hb mental approach to hb game.
"Craig's pot a real steady all-around
game ," McDermott said. "He's a really
good serve and volleyer, but he's got all
the necessary strokes. If he can just
believe in himself more, I think hell
have a really good year."
Madiera said sometimes she has to :
fight a lack of concentration when
she's on the court .
"I'm working hard on trying to keep
my mind cn the game for a whole
match," libera said. "Sometimes 111
be out on th e court end 111 sort of day
dream for a little bit IVe got to learn to
concentrate End not drift of? for a
garoeortwo." -..'v. .. ...
. McDermott and women's tennis
coach Kathy Hawkins arce on their
respective player's leadership abilities.
"I think Llirni docsnt fit into the typ
ical leader role," IIT7la3 said. "I think
she shows her IzzZzrzliz? to .the kidi-'
vidual, eepeciy to freshmen."
McDermott abo prabed hb player.
Cral3 bjuet a really nice guy on and
eff the court," McDermott said. "I think
all the guys on the team respect him.
Ha decent really show leadership by
talkir.3 that much. Ha does it mere by
setting a good example."
Johnson said he had considered
gcini to a different university, but UNL
was hb No. 1 choice.
When I was a freshman, I looked at
Iowa, Ohio State and a few other Bij
Eiht schocb," Johnson said. "I just felt
that the coaching and facilities at
Nebraska were the best in the Big
Eiht I also wanted to help Coach
McDermott turn the program around
here."
Madiera said she also considered
going to a different- school, but the
Nebraska coach, players and facilities
won her over.
Both players put team goab ahead
of their own.
"I dont care which spot I play at as
long as I'm competitive," Magiera said.
"We finished third last year in the Big
Eiht and I think all of us are looking to
move up."
Johnson also said team improve
ment b important
"My first priority b to help the team,"
he said. "When I lose, I'm not upset for
myself; I'm upset for the team. I think
our goal as a team thi3 year is to finish
first or second (in the B13 Eiht). It's
gcir.3 to be hard to beat Oklahoma
Stats, but we're going to try."
Johnson said the lack of publicity
the tennis team receives may be
"I know we had a lot more specta
tors last year than we did the year
before. I think the better we do as a
team, the more people will want to
come out
Why would you want to go
anywhere but HEMS?
WE may not be the answer,
' but we're REAL - GLOSS!
You can't beat the FalENDUESS,
CONVENIENCE end REASONACLE PRICES.
