Husker freshmen chalk up
victory against Ellsworth
By Jeff Goodwin
The only thing different about Fri
day's freshman football game was that
the soft-drink cups in the press box
were larger than they were last year.
Otherwise, things were fairly normal
as the Nebraska freshmen defeated
Ellsworth Junior College, 27-10, to open
their first season under Coach Dan
Young.
Ellsworth scored first after linebacker
Kendal Barz recovered an errant pitch
by Husker quarterback Hendley Haw
kins. Ellsworth moved the ball well until
the Husker defense stiffened and the
team from Iowa Falls, Iowa, was forced
to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Pat
Johnson. Ellsworth did not score again
until the fourth quarter.
Husker Defensive back Jerry Upton
intercepted a Brad White pass and
returned it 45 yards to the Ellsworth
35-yard line to end an Ellsworth threat
in the first quarter.
It took Nebraska 11 plays to score
from there. I-back Jon Kelley scored
on a 1-yard run.
Neither team scored again in the
half, as E lisworth wa unable to mount
any type of offensive threat, and fum
bles stalled the Cornhusker offense.
Nebraska finally got going offensively
midway through the third quarter when
Jeff Taylor, who, like Young came to
UNL from Omaha Westside, came in at
.quarterback and took the Huskers 67
yards on eight plays. Taylor scored on
an 8-yard run.
Young praised Taylor's performance
at quarterback.
"Jeff did a good job," Young said. "He
moved the ball consistently."
Nebraska got on the scoreboard in
the fourth quarter on a 49-yard pass
Jxom Taylor to wingback Todd Cope.
But on its next possession, Ells
worth quarterback Milton Kimb rough
dropped back and hit receiver Derrick
Harden at the Ellsworth 30-yard line.
The ball was tipped by a Husker defen
sive back and fell into Harden' hands.
The Milwaukee native raced un
touched into the end zone to complete
a 97-yard touchdown play.
The Huskers got on the board one
more time when fullback Mike Hed
lund plunged over from the 3-yard line
with 22 seconds left.

sity Sept. 29.
Crew seeks members
Nebraska's crew team will have
an organizational meeting Tuesday
at 7 p.m. at the Crew Boathouse.
The rowing team, which competes
with other intercollegiate squads
throughout the year, is looking for
new members for the men's and
women's teams.
Rick Sedgwick, who became direc
tor of UNL intramurals after Stan
Campbell was named director of
recreation last summer, resigned
Wednesday. Campbell said Sedgwick
wanted to re-examine his personal
career goals and move back to the
Northwest. Kenda Scheele, who was
Sedgwick's assistant, will act as di
rector until a replacement can be
found.
