roiice snume sniits
to aid campus security
By Lauri Hopple
The UNL Police department is aiming at October
as the launching date of an additional patrol shift
The shift will be a swing shift and will overlap the
shifts starting directly brfore and after it UNL
Police Chief Gail L. Gade Sidd. The shift will run from
7:30 p.m. to 4 am.
The combined shift was created to ensure a larger
number of officers on patrol during what UNL police
consider to be the most active campus hours 8
p.m. to midnight. With the combined shift, six to
eight officers will be on patrol at the same time. With
the former plan, two or three officers patrolled
during each shift, including the most active hours.
Gade said the new shift resulted from increased
student requests to step up security.
"Overall, I think well give better service to the
university," he said. "Well be able to respond to calls
-more quickly."
The number of officers has not increased with the
addition of the swing shift. Gade said this is because
of budget cuts within the university. The entire force
has been reduced from 45 officers in 1974 to 29 this
fall. One officer was relieved of his duties as a result
of the shift reorganization. .
Gade said that before the Shift reorganization,
there were times when only two officers were
available to patrol both East Campus and City
Campus because of the small number of officers in
the deDartment Gade said this i?.mp!!v hrn?nH
when one or two officers had to miss duty od no
replacements were avsils&Ie.
This will take up the slack so if people are sick,
well still have more than we ever had on p-trcl
from 8 p.m. to midnint," he tzl
