Time to get some more money. But where? The Nebraska Job Service or employment firms like Manpower or Kelly Services Inc. all provide work, but the separate agencies have differ ent purposes. The Nebraska Job Service is mainly a referral source, Operations Manager Jacque Baluch, said. The service is a state agency that interviews applicants and places them with employers who contact the ser vice. The job service usually provides a steady job at one location. It is a free service for both the employer' and employees. Manpower and Kelly Girl are private firms that hire people for temporary labor for business clients that contact the firms. "We pay the employee and send a bill to the customer," said a Kelly Girl supervisor, Lori Finkral. Kelly services' employees are trained in the Kelly Girl office and are paid for that training, Finkral said. Much of the work available through Manpower is office work requiring typ ing skills. Office manager Eleanor Crosier said she also receives calls for heavy general labor. i ' Employment agency and job service Officials said they expect job oppor tunities to improve this fall Lab Studies If you dont feel a traditional job is for you, you can also rent all or part of your body to medical science. . The University Plasma Center pays students for donations, and Harris Laboratories Inc. pays volunteers to test pharmaceuticals. At the plasma center, students receive $10 per donation and can get more through bonus programs adver tised in the Daily Nebraskan, said Colette Kiefer, plasma center assistant manager. Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood. The whole blood is spun in a cen trifuge until it separates. The plasma is extracted and the red blood cells are returned to the donor's body. "The actual donating process takes one hour," she said. Students can give plasma two times in Seven days, but they must wait 72 hours between donations. ' Kiefer said the plasma is used for medication for hemophiliacs. Albumin (a protein compound in plasma) is used to treat shock and burn victims.
