This advice may sound like common
.sense, but with students moving onto
campus, hundreds of stereos, tele
visions and many personal articles will
be made available to would-be thieves.
Failure to lock car doors and rooms
while unloading could easily result in
the loss of these valuable items.
Chamberlain stror.g'suggeEted record
ing serial numbers or engraving social
security numbers on unmarked items.
If a thief occurs, students should file a
report immediately with a policeofilcer.
Time is crucial when attempting to
locate stolen possessions, she said.
The UNL Police Department is also
in charge of student and faculty park
ing permit sales. To handle the great
demand for permits, the parking office
will move to the Bob Devaney Sports
Center on a temporary basis today
through Friday and on Monday. Hours
will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on these
days. Permits will be sold on a first
come, first served basis and students
wishing to purchase permits should
being their student ID card and vehicle
The parking office at 1335 N. 17th St
will be closed during permit sales at
the sports center and will reopen Tues
day. Permits then will be sold between
7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Permits are color- and number-coded
and you should park only in the lot for
which you have a permit. Failure to do
so could cost you $15. Wheel locks
were phased out last October, so any
vehicle found on campus with outstand
ing tickets more than 20 business days
old will be towed. Recovering your
vehicle will cost $20 the standard
towing rate plus the payment of any
and all outstanding citations.
The UNL Police Department also
offers a variety of other services, includ
ing crime prevention programs and
bicycle license sales. The crime preven
tion programs are available to campus
organizations. Bicycle licensess cost $1
and are required by city ordinance.
Engraving tools for" inscribing valuables,
are available at the police station and
at dormitory desks.
