The Association of St udents of the University of
Nebraska serves two functions: to represent stu
dents and provide service for students, J 983 84 ,
ASUN President Matt Wallace said.
AS UN is designed to take students' concerns to
administrative groups, faculty committees, legisla
tive groups, the NU Board of Regents and the people
of Nebraska, according to the UNL student
handbook.
ASUN frequently presents student views to uni
versity committees making governing decisions.
ASUN's budget is made up of student fees.
ASUN consists of an executive branch, a judicial
branch and a legislative branch. The executive
branch includes the ASUN president, the first vice
president and the second vice president, all elected
by popular vote. The election commissioner and
cabinet members are appointed by the president.
The ASUN Senate is composed of 35 representa
tives elected by students. Representation is based
proportionally on college enrollment figures. The
senate serves as a liaison between faculty, admin
istration and the student body. There are also
action committees, made up of senators; such as
Academic Policy, Budget and Fees, Campus Life and
Special Topics.
Standing committees such as Constitution, Fees
Allocation and Internal Affairs are comprised of
ASUN senators and students either at large or
appointed by the Speaker of the Senate and president.

When there is an opening on a committee, it is
advertised in the Daily Nebraskan for at least t wo
days, Wallace said. Applications are processed and
interviews are conducted at that time. This year a
new appoint ment board will be added, Wallace said,
days, Wallace said.
The St udent Court consists of one chief just ice
and six associate justices. The justices are ap
pointed by the retiring ASUN president. The Court
acts on matters concerning the constitutionality of
Senate legislation on some impeachment pro
ceedings. ASUN has a Student Legal Services center in the
Nebraska Union which is a prepaid legal advising,
counseling and information service funded by stu
dent fees. The staff attorney helps in negotiating
problems and explaining the law, but does not pro
vide court representation.
The ASUN book exchange is one of the services
ASUN offers annually. The volume of books handled
each year has significantly incrased, according to an
ASUN brochure. The exchange takes place the first
week of each semester.
The ASUN senate meets every Wednesday at 0:30
p.m. The first and third meetings of the mont h are in
the Nebraska Union and the second and fourth
meetings will alternate between Fast Campus and
the Culture Center. The meetings are open to the
public.
The Government Liaison Committee is an inde
pendent committee for ASUN and any student may
join. GLC members coordinate and communicate
student issues and concerns to governmental authorities.
Medical help ready at Health Center
Everyone knows that it's no fun being sick. And it's
worse when sickness strikes a person who is away
from home and the regular family doctor.
But students can take comfort in knowing that ,
medical attention is available at the University
Health Center, 15th and U streets, when illness or
injury strikes.
The health center offers a variety of health
services to students enrolled for four credit hours or
more during the semester.
The health center is open weekdays and Saturday
mornings. If a. health problem does not require
immediate attention, appointments at the clinic
should be made at least one day in advance. A
health professional also maintains a regular schedule
at the East Campus Health Resource Center in the
East Union.
A health professional is on duty at the City
Campus Health Center after hours and a doctor also
is on call. Students requiring after-hours treatment
can call the center or go to the center's entrance
There is no charge to see a doctor during clinic
hours. A reduced rate is charged for specialists,
X-ray, laboratory procedures, medications, hospitaliza
tions, surgical procedures, physical therapy, dental
health services, specialized tests and procedures,
allergy injections, dermotology treatment supplies,
mental health services, biofeedback and for use of
the after-hours clinic.
Medical services available at the health center
include:
