Thousands of UNL students are arriv
ing on campus for the upcoming school
year, and with them come questions
concerning financial aid and scholar
ships. The UNL Office of Scholarships and
Financial Aid suggests students be
patient and informed while going
through the sometimes tedious pro
cess of applying for and receiving the
numerous types of financial aid.
Students granted Guaranteed Stu
dent Loans (GSL) should pick up their
checks on Monday through Aug. 3 1 at
the north doors of the Centennial
Room in the Nebraska Union. The
checks will be distributed from 8:30
a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
After Aug. 31, the GSL checks will be
distributed at the Administration
Building.
Liz Carranza, assistant director of
scholarships and financial aid, said
students should be well-prepared when
they pick up their GSL checks.
"Students must present their cur
rent UNL student ID card," Carranza
said. Carranza said students should be
prepared to wait in line, though some
lines can be avoided if the student
picks up his check on the second or
third day the checks are distributed.
Students applying for a first semester
only GSL should submit their applica
tions no later than Sept. 1.
Advances issued Monday
Cash advances and book vouchers
will be issued Monday through Sept. 2,
according to Chris Vaage, assistant
director of scholarships and financial
aid. On the first three days of school,
the advances and vouchers will be
issued at the north doors of the Cen
tennial Room in the Nebraska Union.
The hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
On Sept. 1 and 2, they will be issued
in the Financial Aid Office, Adminis
tration Building from 8:30 a.m. to 1 1 :30
a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Work-study assignments will also be
issued at the north doors of the Cen
tennial Room during the same hours.
Assignments should be picked up no
later than Sept. 2.
Doug Severs, assistant director of
scholarships and financial aid, said
picking up work study assignments
enables the students to visit and get to
know their new employers.
The National Direct Student Loan
(NDSL) checks will not be available
until Sept. 26, 27 and 28. Students will
. be notified of the time and place the
checks should be picked up.
Students come across numerous dead
lines during the year, including first
semester tuition deadline on Sept. 28.
According to Vaage, any grant money a
student receives will be credited to the
student's account.
Aid available
Financial aid for second semester
will be available beginning Oct. 15,
although aid for second semester will
be limited, Severs said. Checking with
the financial aid office is recommended
to students interested in applying for
second semester scholarships. The dead
lines differ between the many scholar
ships, Severs said.
Government cutbacks haven't greatly
affected the amount of m oney availa
ble to students through financial aid,
he said.
This year, the same amount of aid is
available as last year," Severs said. The
only problem is that the costs of col
lege have gone up."
Waiting in lines will soon become a
reality, and the assistant directors
recommended students be informed
and plan ahead.
"If you want to see an adviser, you'll
have to make an appointment," Car
ranza said. "You can't just walk in and
expect to see them right away."
. Financial aid and scholarship ques
tions can be answered at the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid, Ad
ministration Building 1 13, or by calling
472-2030.
