Maxell UDXL-II C-90 $2.99 each 'Album ' Continued from Page 39 It's obvious Jctt doesn't come from a glamorous opera background like Pat Henatar, but she still has the perfect voice. A sneer which captures her rebellious attitude. A prime example of her skill in interpreting her own material is the second sond on Album, "Handyman." She begins the song in a sweet voice as she calls out to her lover, "Randy, Randy I love vou I love you but at the same time I HATE YOU!" She ends the song growling in a way which Henatar could never capture while attempting to hit high notes. However, the problem of Jett's lack of range becomes painfully apparent when she attempts songs like "Why Can't we be Happy." This marks the first time Jett's voice comes out from under the blasting guitars. The result is awful. Her voice is so out of tune it hurts my ears. Jctt should stick to loud rock 'n roll, which is what she does best. Another gripe critics seem to have with Jett is the large number of remakes o n h er alb u ms . B u t o n A lb u m, on ly t wo are covers, "Everyday People," origi nally by Sly and the Family Stone, and Tossin' and Turnin'" originally by Bobby Lewis. Personally 1 don't mind remakes on albums. Usually I prefer the originals, as I do wit h "Everyday People," but Jet t does have a knack for making a song sound as if it were her own. For in stance, most people didn't know that the title song to "I Love Rock and Roll" was a cover of an Arrows song. Now I've finished defending Joan Jett, but like Joan says, "I don't give a damn about my bad reputation!"
