Shaffer 's glossary ofrrrtsy terms
dealing with space and abstractions
A weekly art column? In the Arts
and Entertain merit section? Gosh, what
a novel idea!
But seriously, folks, this space will
routinely be devoted to subjective,
verbose, biased, polysylabbic babbl
ings. I promise.
Since I know that my column will
inevitably be the one you t urn to first, I
should probably make it decipherable.
Hie glossary of artsy terms below should
help you.
Glossary of Artsy Terms
1. genre (john-ra) Pertains to a cate
gory of painting that depicts ordinary
life (not to be confused with those seen
on Real People) and aLso means a par
ticular kind, sort, or style of art.
Billy
Shaffer
Example: "Gen repainting in the 1 5th
century has become a genre."
2. Abstract (ab stract) My big book
has no less than 21 definitions of this
word. My favorites (and t he ones that
I'll be using in this "space" are:) a. an
idea that cannot lead to any practical
result, b. action of taking away or
separating, "the sensation of cold is
due to the abstraction of heat from our
bodies " c. a work of art using lines,
colors, and shapes without reference
to natural objects.
Example: This column will be a
literal representation of the abstrac
tion of ideas from my body."
3. space ( spaase) Not "outer" or the
70s California kind. The land you can
fill up with stuff if you want to.
Example: "Let's hang your aunt's
watercolor in the space behind the
boxes in the closet."
i. art (rrrt) I think it was either
Plato or Orson Welles that said "Art is
the thing that's more important than
television, but not as much fun ... oh
yeah, it's what separates man from
beasts, also." For me, art needs three
things: an artist, something to look at
or hear and somebody to see or hear it.
Example: "His felling of the tree in
the forest was not art, because nobody
was around to see it, even though the
cuts were nicely made."
5. figurative (fig-ra-tive) This per
tains to a known shape or likeness,
usually human.
Example: "I ler bronze bust was pure
ly figurative, although its scale bor
dered on abstraction."
A devcted readership is a two-way
street. If you promise to read this
column, I'll promise to never use the
following words:
1. fascinating
2. awesome
3. best
4. Leroy Neiman
