I know what you're thinking. Here's a review for a
Joan Jett album, is there any doubt that the
reviewer is going to hate it? After all, all the critics
hate Joan Jett.
Wrong! You're now reading something as rare as a
well-paid UNL professor a positive Joan Jett
review. Oh, I know I'm supposed to be a sophisti
cated music snob who ates any record with any
popular appeal whatsoever. So for some reason I
feel I should defend Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

You see, my problem or political significance in
the lyrics or some personal crisis in Jctt's life. This
record is just good basic rock 'n' roll. It makes no
attempt to be anything else.
But I can still hear all the music snobs out there.
They're saying Jctt can't sing, all she , does is remakes
of old songs, she sweats on stage a lot and that's
really gross. I know the music snobs are saying these
things because I happen to be a music snob and I
couldn't agree more. But I still like Jett and all the
reasons why I like her resurface on her latest effort.
Albumls the best follow up to a number-one LB
I've heard in recent memory. And making a good
follow up after a chart topper is tough. Like many
recording efforts after a number-one album, I don't
think Album will get the popular support Love
Rock and Roll did. That's because Album just
doesn't have an anthem like Jctt's two previous LPs.
For instance, her first LP, Bad Reputation inspir
ed rebellion. The title song set the pace for the
album and for the rest of Jett's works. After listening
to the title song of that LP, I often feel like walking
up to an authority figure, belching in his or her face
and announcing, "Hey, I don't give a damn about my
bad reputation!"
Yes, Joan Jett inspires rebellion, and that, for
those of you who have never heard a song recorded
before 1060, is how rock 4n' roll got started.
But once over the fact that Album lacks its own
anthem, I found that the two previous themes still
carry over into the third. Yes, Joan Jett still loves
rock 'n' roll and she still doesn't give a damn about
her bad reputation.
