'Star Chamber' recipe
sour despite intention
By Peter Schmitz
"The Star Chamber" is a film graced with capable
performers, skillful photography and an interesting
moral parodox to move the narrative.
So why is the final product so mediocre? Because
it is a recipe film that wants to preach, entertain and
make money all at once.
Directorscreenwriter Peter Hyams and co-writer
Roderick Taylor (who wrote the original story)
reach for several ingredients. Some of them are good
and others are bad.

The time has come to consider the fairness of a
legal system as this film does where reaucratic
technicalities often take precedence over justice
and criminals run free. Yet, whenever Hollywood
deals with this issue (as it has in "Death Wish" and
"And Justice For All") ire is exclusively directed
against the sexually deviant, or blue-collar criminal.
Our media rarely considers vigil antism as a response
to white-collar and corporate crime. Could one
imagine a movie with Charles Bronson about a man
who goes after automobile executives following the
deaths of his wife and daughter which were caused
by a defective gas tank; CoRtlnued on Pe 43
