UNL cross country runners aiming
to be the first to cross the finish line

"We had a good team last year and we have the
nucleus of a decent team this year," UNLs cross
country coach Jay Dirkson said about the men's
squad for the 1983 season.
Dirkson, in his first year as head coach of both the
men's and women's teams, says he's looking forward
to some good competition in the Big Eight Con
ference. The Husker Harriers finished seventh in the
conference last year but the return of fine runners
and a successful recruitng season should help the
Huskers compete with defending Champion Iowa
State and powers Colorado and Missouri.
"We return Mark Adam, the Canadian, and Big
Eight Conference steeplachase champion, Mark
Gokie and Tom Hoffman are back for us, and Gerard
O'Callahan from Ireland who ran track last spring
but will run for us this fall," Dirkson said.
Nebraska had a good recruiting crop for this fall,
including the top three freshman runners from
Nebraska. Newcomers Kyle Foster and Kraig Van
derbeek from Lincoln, and Brian Clark from Auburn
will join Kurt Russell, a junior college transfer from
Southwest Michigan who won the National Junior
College Championship in 1082.
"It's too early to tell exactly how well we will finish,
but we have the characteristics of a fine team.Dirk
son said. "We had a good summer of running and the
kids are coming in with a good attitude. I'm sure
we'll do our best running as the season goes along."
While the men's team has the advantage of good
depth, the women's team is starting from scratch.
The team is young and inexperienced but, Dirkson
said, there is a lot of fine talent coming into the
season.
"We recruited one of the top runners in the
country in Karlene Erickson " he said. Erickson,
from Ericson, is considered to be an Olympic hope
ful, she dominated Nebraska High School distance
races the past four years.
"She's a better distance runner than a miler, so
she will help us tremendously," he added. Dirkson
said he also sees some good talent in JUl Noel, a Class
A State champion last year. "But as a whole, we are
starting over " he said.
Other runners include Carol Nunnally, Karita
Cordik, Amy Bower and Lynn Levanseller.
Dirkson will begin his first year as head coach
after one year as women's coach at Missouri. Before
that, he was an assistant at Illinois for five years and
head coach at South Dakota State for eight years. He
said he is excited about coaching both the men's and
women's teams.
"I came from a great program to an even better
one," he said. The facilities here are great, the
attitudes are great, I'm looking forward to a fine
year."
