Telephone line on hold
Plans to hook residence hall phones to the
university low-cost line have been put on hold until
questions about the plan's legality have been settled.
Ruth Michalecki, director of telecommunicat ions
at UNL, said in 1081 the Federal Communications
Commission made it legal for large organizations
such as hotels and universities, to share or sell their
long distance networks.
The September hookup date, or any future
hookup, has been delayed because the Nebraska
Department of Administrative Services questioned
UNL's right to offer the service.
Compared to direct dialing costs, the university
line would save students 20 to 25 percent on their
in-state calls.
"It was a perfect marriage," Michalecki said.
Administration offices and students generally use
the phones for long distance calls at opposite times
of the day, she said.
"We're not interested in reselling long distance to
our students," she said. Letters were sent to
students during the summer informing them of the
new service. Students were told they would not have
a monthly charge or a sign up fee.
Almost 100 percent of the students responded in
favor of the plan, she said. "Hundreds of parents
called to say what a great thing it is we're doing for
the students."
Michalecki said she sees the delay as a "temporary
roadblock.
"We're making an honest, true effort to save the
students money.
