1JNI. Ixuisini' maintenance will spend
about $700,000 this summer on repairs
and additions to the residence halls.
Projects will include everything from
adding safety lights to the Cathcr-1 ound
Neihardt residence halls to replacing the
roof on Burr Hall.
Glen Schumann, assistant director
of housim; for maintenance operations,
said about 40 residence hall students have
been hired for summer maintenance work.
Most will paint, but a few will do custodial
work.
Schumann said niaior work, like
replacing roofs, will be done by outside
contractors.
Maintenance has projects planned lor
every complex. Some of the most costly
projects are:
Abel-Sandoz
S 25 ,000 to remodel the snack bar
area.
- S 2 5, 000 to replace the three main
entrances, now mostly glass, with new
energy-saving brick entrances.
SI 6,000 to renovate the main floor
office area of Abel Hall, including
consolidating the student mailboxes so
that one oTce worker can distribute all
the mail.
father-Pound-Neihardt
-$4,000 to put a vestibule in the west
entrance of the food service.
-$100,000 to install emergency lighting
in the corridors and stairwells. These lights
will provide auxiliary lighting in case of
power outages or tornadoes. The other
halls already have such lights.
-530,000 to carpet 12 floors.
-$140,000 to replace the windows
in all of the student rooms in Keihaidt.
-SI 5,000 for a new trash chute in
Cather Hall.
- 524,000 for new chairs for student
rooms in Cather-Pound.
$4,000 to repaint the ceiling at the
(TN food service.
Harper-Scliramm-Smilh
-$4,000 each for three vestibules, one
in the north entrance of Harper Hall and
two at the entrances to the food service.
Schumann said the vestibules are installed
as an cnercy saving item.
- $15, 000 to replace all the drapes in
Smith Hall.
-$22,000 to rccarpet five floors in the
complex.
-$36,000 to replace the Harper Hall
roof.
$25,000 for a new roof on Smith
Hall.
-$6,700 to replace the room chairs
on two floors.
Burr-Fedde
$12,000 to replace a roof on Burr
East .
Selleck Quadrangle
-$17,500 to put thermostats in each
room. Schumann said the thermostats
allow more temperature control, which
saves energy, and are preset so they can
never go over 68 degrees.
$20,000 for smoke detectors in each
room.
-$4,000 to replace drapes.
$10,000 to paint around windows
on the outside.
Also, $15,000 has been allocated to
replace a roof at family student housing
and S5,000 will go to replace the doors
on all student rooms at Love Memorial
Co-op Hall with solid core fire protection
doors, Schumann said.
He said lounge improvements in all the
halls will cost $20,000. Another project,
replacing ceramic tile around all the sinks
in Cather, Pound and Abel halls will cost
$7,700 at each hall, he said.
Schumann said usual maintenance work,
like painting, replacing tiles and cleaning,
will cost another $75,000.
