3 Daily Nebraskan Stfudecits meet wifth Doriniafes in speech exd By Christopher Burbach A guard at the front desk checked the seven youths identifications, then instructed them to leave the contents of their pockets in a locker on the wall. They were guided through an electronic Friskem device and "patted" by another guard, then led through a series of doors and across a prison yard to a room full of prisoners. Why would a group of UNL students travel to the Nebraska State Penitentiary and spend an evening with the inmates? "It exposes us to a different environment - you learn from different environments," Randy Christy said. Christy is president of the East Campus Gavel Club, which has been making a trip to the Penitentiary once each semester for two years to meet with the prison's Toastmasters speech communications club, the INnovators. The INnovators have also visited the Gavel Club's meetings at East Campus. "The benefits of the exchange are reciprocal," inmate and INnovator Keith Askia Russ said. "We're just being people. It gives us an opportunity to break down stereotypes." St3n Wallen, associate professor of Food Science and Technology and the Gavel Club's faculty advisor, started the exchange program with the INnovators, Christy said. The program fits in with the Gavel Club's goals, which include self improvement as well as experience in uatmse program public speaking and better communication skills, by exposing members to different types of people in unusual surroundings. The INnovators gives the inmates involved in it something to do, according to Bill Roundey.a penitentiary employee who works with the group. He said that the club gives its members the opportunity to develop communication skills and fill time. Russ said that the club is a learning experience. "We're learning about trust, about friendship, about being genuine; being genuine is a feather in anyone's cap." He said that when the Gavel Club members come to his group's meetings, the prison environment erases the differences between the groups. "What you have in your pocket is unimportant. Words are important," Russ said. Of the Gavel Club members, Russ said "We appreciate them coming in. Even if one just sat there and didn't do anything, he would learn something." Roundey said the exchange program gives the INnovators a chance to "have real good contact with street people." It also gives them a chance to travel, he said. "It (the exchange program) enables two speech communication clubs to get together and learn from each other," Christy said. "It's just getting to meet somebody that you wouldn't usually meet. You learn to appreciate things you may take for granted." Planets to star at Behlen Observatory An open house at Behlen Observatory at Mead is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 1 1 p.m. Friday.
