Why is yell squad advisor Nancy Williams resigning? Rumors have been Hying since the end of basketball season that Duke freshman Bill Jackman would transfer to Nebraska after seeing limited playing time for the Blue Devils. It was learned Monday that Stu sent to Nebraska last week and was last seen on the desk of academic counselor Ursula Walsh. Jackman could not be reached for comment Monday, but his high school coach at Grant, Doyle Denney, said Jackman discussed a transfer with him while home on spring break. Denney said he believes that the chances of Jackman coming to play for the Cornhuskers are "50-50 or better." Duke's spring term ends April 29, and Denney said it is likely that Jackman will reach a decision by then. In the Nebraska basketball office, part-time assistant coach Randy Cipriano told the Daily Nebraskan: "We've heard from everybody about Bill Jackman . . . except Bill Jackman." This is a case of "don't call me, I'll call you." Under NCAA rules, Jackman is free to contact NU coach Moe Iba, but Iba cannot talk to Jackman until he officially enrolls in school. Too bad that rule doesn't apply to zealous Husker supporters and the news media. It is going to be a tough enough decision for the 6-8 sophomore-to-be. choosing between a basketball career at Nebraska and an CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-1761 S2.50 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. Let's hope that Nebraskans have enough maturity to accept whatever decision Jackman makes. After all, it is his decision, not ours. Sunday newspaper readers were stunned to read that Dave Rimington. Nebraska's Academic Ail-American center, had withdrawn from school. Horror of horrors. How could the already legendary No. 50 quit school without graduating? I would like to see what any of us "typical" college students would do if we had had Rimington's schedule this winter. Would you pass up a chance to be on demand as a banquet speaker, or appear on Bob Hope's Christmas show, or play charity basketball cames for a little extra spending money? This is on top of preparing yourself for an NFL career by participating in mini-training camps. I don't blame Dave Rimington one bit for deciding that school was too much for him to handle this semester. In fact, I admire his decision. Citing personal reasons, yell squad advisor Nancy Williams resigned her position last week. Not so coin cidentally. her resignation occurred less than two weeks after tryouts for the 1983-84 yell squad were held. The April 4 tryouts saw a sequence of strange events that led to friction between past and present members of the squad and Williams. During the tryouts, one female contestant was sent out to audition by other contestants, even though she was not on the list of 12 semifinalists. In addition, as the judges were making their final decision, a member of the 1982-83 squad publicly stated the judging process was not on the level. After the tryouts were completed, tom-up judging score sheets were found in the press room wastebasket by a Daily Nebraskan reporter. Pieced back together, the sheets indicated that some female contestants were not Two-bedroom apt. near East Campus, off-street parking, laundry. 3525 Baldwin. Call after 3 p.m. 466-4554. The All-University Roll Off and All-University Shootout begin tonight. Rollie Hughes, recreation manager of the Nebraska Union, said this will be the 14th year for the bowling championship and the first year for the billiards chain ionship. Hughes said 32 teams are entered in the bowling tourna ment. The format will be single elimination. The admission fee is SI per person, per set. The first place team will win S200 and a trophy. Tire second and third place teams will win tropliies. Hughes said each league will send two teams to the tournament. The first place team from one league will bowl the second place team from another league. Hughes said the billiards tournament will be similar in format. There will be six teams. The fee is 50 cents per person. The billiard tournament will conclude tomorrow night . The bowling tournament will continue Wednesday, Thursday and Monday. Spectators are welcome. scored by all the judges, or received zero points - hardly a likely occurrence since the contestants had made the first cut. During the next 10 days, Williams refused to show score sheets or to discuss the tryouts in general with any contestant. I called her on April 7, asking to discuss the tryouts as part of a cheerleading story. She refused, claiming a DN reporter had called for an interview (no one on the DN staff had) and that not every student on this campus needed to know about yell squad tryouts. When things are run as poorly as the tryouts were, perhaps every student on this campus does have the right to know about the tryouts. Perhaps the next advisor will have a more adequate process for selecting yell squad members.
