Kurtenbach, a UNL graduate and executive director of the NCLU since 1979, was guest lecturer at a UNL crimi nal justice class taught by Professor B.J. Keller. The NCLU was founded 16 years ago as the state office of the American Civil Liberties Union and now has about 900 members, Kurtenbach said. Like the NCLU, the ACLU is a privately funded organization that defends the Constitutional Bill of Rights, he said. Roger Baldwin founded the ACLU in 1920 to help draft resisters, lie said. "The NCLU defends the Bill of Rights in three ways," Kurtenbach said. "First, they lobby before the Nebraska Legislature and other governmental bodies for bills which would advance individual rights and against bills wliich would not." The NCLU can also defend a person's Constitutional rights in court at no cost, Kurtenbach said. Also, the NCLU does some educational work , he said , because most people liave little understanding about the Bill of RigKts. Although two out of the three branches of America's government respond only to the majority, Kurtenbach said the court system is designed to value the rights of individuals. In a recent NCLU case, he said a football coach in York had his players say the Lord's Prayer before and after every game. After a complaint from one of the players' mothers, the NCLU accepted the case because the Constitution states that there should be a wall of separa tion between government and religion, he said. The NCLU is adamantly opposed to the death penalty, Kurtenbach said. Continued on Page 7 Ma!ce some Fast TRACKS y 1fL?fiC7 nil slioes in stock! "Z. ' ' 1 )qQ2 tipZ CENTRUM PLAZA ...
