Financial aid bills need support
FAST
BUCK!
There seem to be times in each year
when legislative issues, state and national,
that concern students, reach their focal
point. At this critical stage, many decisions
regarding the future of students and of
higher education hang in the balance.
Today we face such a time.
In the next few weeks the Legislature
will be considering LB126;a bill to create
the Nebraska Work-Study Program. This
program would aid eligible Nebraska
students by providing Work-Study
positions in the public and private sector.
At the same time, Congress will be
considering the budget for fiscal 1984.
Included in these budget considerations
will be the provisions for student financial
assistance programs.
In the administration's proposed
budget, presented on Jan. 31, the student
financial assistance system has been tar
geted for dramatic reorganization. These
proposals are too extensive to go into
great detail at this time. It has been esti
mated, however, that these proposals, if
adopted, could result in the loss of one
million financial aid awards nationwide.
Throughout the year, the Nebraska
State Student Association has been actively
working for the passage of LB 126 and
keeping the Nebraska Congressional dele
gation informed on the views and concerns
of Nebraska's students.
Now is the time to get involved. Write
your state senator today and ask for
support for LB 126. Write your Congres
sional representatives today and ask for
support for student financial aid through
adequate funding and for opposition to the
proposed reorganization of the financial
aid system.
Additional information will be made
available on campus by the NSSA. Learn
the facts and get involved. Write your
representatives today!
