11 Tuesday, April 5, 1903 Daily Nebraskan Vasao. . . C-Huslcei cagers. Continued from Page 10 Towing the Sunbird out llirough the entrance rump to the rest area, Jim attempted to make a U-turn onto Interstate SO and slid the tow truck into the median's 5-foot ditch, the Sunbird blocking both castbound lanes. Finally, with the help of a Des Moines couple (who I call Fred and Ethel Mertz) who directed traffic, and another tow truck passing by, which I will call wayfaring wrecker, Jim's tow truck was pulled out of the ditch. Fred and Ethel invited Bob and I to warm up in their camper, but we were a little apprehensive. We had heard the stories of stranded motorists who entered campers, and never returned. But we figured that the worse thing that could happen was that we'd be driven to New York anyway to see Desi and Lucy. Jim finally motioned to us that he was ready and we climbed into his cab, looking for that elusive creature, an open service station that sold tires. He had the gall to ask us why we were so nervous as we drove. Who wouldn't be after nearly plunging into a 20-foot ditch CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-1761 $2.50 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. After stopping at two service stations, we found one that had a tire for the poor Sunbird. As Jim unhooked the car, he said "It's a good thing you belong to the auto club, otherwise you'd need $100 to pay for the tow." At every stop we made after Des Moines, we heard the same tiring : "You're driving to New York? And you're going to be there by Monday night? You guys are out of your minds." Dauntlcssly, we continued our trek. Chicago, South Bend, Akron, State College - the town nameposts kept sailing by as the speedometer held at a steady 65 mph. Finally, we drove through New" York's Lincoln Tunnel, the Sunbird's musical horn blaring "There Is No Place Like Nebraska." After the 30-hour drive, New York was almost anti-climatic, save for the Huskcrs' loss and the three-day party by Fresno State rooters on the seventh floor of the New York Statler Hotel. One other travel note: it is possible to travel from New York to Omaha on $15.21 and an Amoco credit card. Paid for by the Committee to Elect Barton Chandler T. Barton Chandler Continued from Page 10 Now Vasan said that he is at a point where he can use Ids serve offensively, but not at a point where he can use it as an overpowering weapon. McDcrinott said one of Vasan's strongest points is his strong volleying abilities. "Now if I could only get him to use it more," McDermott said. "His game is really good overall. He's really patient and tie likes to work his points." Vasan said that all of Ids tennis activities tend to cut into his social life. "In-season, I'm away all the time, and all of my free time goes to studying and keeping up with tests," he said. And his off-seasons are filled with a strict prac tice schedule. This summer Vasan plans to compete in tennis circuits in Canada and Europe. "I'm definitely going to Canada," he said, "and there's a nine-out-of-10 chance I'm going to Germany. " As for goals, Vasan sad he has visions of winning the Big Eight title in either his number five singles spot or number three doubles position. To look at the way I played last year and to have compiled that record (12-2)..." McDermott said he was looking forward to the next two years of Vasan's eligibility "He's fun to be around and unique," McDermott said. "He comes from a really different background and he's really pretty funny with the stories he tells." Vasan agreed and said Lincoln was quite different from Bombay. Bombay is a city of 7 million, and people tend to be tougher and colder, with everyone watching out for themselves like New York or Chicago or Detroit. "But here it's completely different; it's like a dreamy little midwestern town. The people arc so nice. I think that's unique to tliis part of the country, people tend to be hospitable." Vasan has high hopes for the Huskers at the Big Eight Championships. "Tlus team is a lot better than the credit that is given them," Vasan said. 'Per sonally, I think we can't finish less than third." Patterick, Here's hoping your birthday is as special as the times we have shared. Happy 20th!
