Thursday, March 31, 1983 Daily Nebraskan job search . . . Continued from Page 1 Hie report emphasizes that of the new graduates registered with the place ment service who did not find teaching positions, 81 percent placed a geographic restriction on their employment location. Statistics in the report also indicate that one-third of teacher vacancy not ifications from Nebraska secondary schools i prefer that the applicant be qualified to take on additional duties. Tliis usually comes in the form of coaching, being pep club sponsor and other extracurricular duties. "They want someone who is there more than just five periods a day," Wendel said. A delayed hiring season appears to affect the teaching job market, Wendel said. School systems require their returning teachers to sign contracts for the following school year by mid-April; vacancies are announced accordingly. Therefore, the best months to look for a teaching job are usually May, June and July, he said. Teachers College graduates aren't limited to teaching jobs. Wendel said a variety of other fields, such as person- nel management and industrial instruct ion, can benefit from a teacher's organ izational and communication skills. Wendel said the current increase in the number of women of child-bearing age (themselves baby-boom babies) should cause the number of live births to increase. He anticipates that this will increase the demand for teachers in the 1990s.
