Commencement on Thursday, a final on
Saturday, and Friday's classes on
Wednesday. Sound confusing? It is.
The schedule for the 1983-84 academic
year may appear to be illogical, but it took
a lot of logical planning and consideration
to form the schedule.
The time classes begin, end and the
vacation dates are set by a university-wide
calendar committee, Tony Schkade,
assistant director of registration and
records, said. In 1978, the NU Board of
Regents set up the committee after the
merger of UNL, UNO and the Medical
Center systems. The three run on a
semester basis and must follow the
standards and dates set by the committee,
Schkade said.
The committee has to come up with
an acceptable calendar for all three
branches of the university.
1 "UNO is made up of commut ing
students, so it is moie affected by the
community," Schkade said. "They tr to
make their classes coincide with the
Omaha Public Schools schedule," Schade
said.
UNL has students from all over, so
scheduling considerations are dif ferent,
he said. It is a give-and-take situation,"
he added.
After the committee sets up the dates,
it is up to UNI. officials to set registration
and dates for finals.
"We start with Christmas and work
back," Schkade said.
The committee has certain guidelines to
follow: There must be five days for finals,
the last day of class must be five davs
before commencement, and there must be
J 5 Mondays, J 5 luesdays, 15 Wednesdays,
etc. in the class schedule, Schkade said.

considered, 1 he final schedule is made.
"We had the same basic schedule six
years ago," Schkade said, livery six years
t lie first day of classes jumps a full week
because of the day change of Christinas
each year.
"They try to start classes in the last
week of August, but sometimes they'Ll
start in the third week," Schkade said.
After careful consideration, the
schedule is set so finals will be on Saturday
and commencement on Thursday. It wasn't
an error, but a few errors were made in
the schedule. Thanksgiving vacation is
Nov. 24 through 27, Thursday through
Sunday, not Wednesday through Sunday.
Geneial registration for second semester
is Jan. 1 1 through 13, Wednesday through
Friday, not Thursday through Saturday.
