Die week of March 21 tlimnol, n iv.c
been designated as slate Tornado
Awareness Week in Nebraska, said Joyce
Taylor, Vice Chairwoman of the Disaster
Preparedness Commission.
"We are trying to make people in
Nebraska aware that tornado weather is
coming," Taylor said. Last year, Nebraska
had 34 tornado sighting, Taylor said.
"It is very important that people arc
aware of where they go and how to react
during a tornado," she said.
A state-wide tornado drill is scheduled
for Wednesday, Taylor said.
"Sirens will activate both outside and
inside," she said. "We would like to have
people go through the drill as if we were
actually in a tornado watch." A tornado
watch will be issued at 1 p.m. by the
National Weather Service. The tornado
warning will sound at about 1 :40 p.m.
The bells on campus will sound for
3 to 5 minutes at three-second intervals.
They will then sound briefly every minute
every five minutes until all is cleared.
Taylor said.
"If there is a storm anywhere in the
state on Wednesday, the drill will be
cancelled," she said.
The group would like to hear of any
problems that occur during the drill,
Taylor said. Signs should be posted inthe
buildings telling where shelter areas are
located.
