Lommaicee mam parasng information
By Peggy Tolacck
UNIVERSITY PROGRAM COUNCIL WELCOMES
Discussion , but no action , took place because of the
absence of a quorum at the Parking Advisory Committee
meeting I ucsday.
A rough draft of parking information for new students
was distributed to the committee membcts.Thc
information asks students to think about the need for
a car on campus and also gives general information about
parking permits.
li warns that "parking permits are issued on a first
come first -serve basis," and students will probably have
to walk a few blocks to classes even if they purchase a
permit.
The information will be distributed through New
Student Orientation, the Student Handbook, housing's
pamphlet and possibly with car registration information.
Clinton 1 louver, director of the Nebraska Center for
Continuing Education Division of Continuing Studies
and a committee member, said the information promotes
the idea that a car is not necessary on campus.
An unwritten exception of free parking permits for
coaches also was discussed . The cost of maintaining the 45
stalls in Area 7 costs about $12 per stall, which amounts
to more than $500, said Kenneth Marklc, captain of
UNL parking administration. Enforcement of the parking
permits requires about an hour of an officer's time.
Marklc said that when the policy began and in its
early years, three or frur coaches received the free
permits. Now about 40 or 50 coaches or assistants receive
permits, Markle said.
Students' complaints about car towings could be
prevented if students would call and find out if they
have any unpaid tickets, Markle said. Two or more unpaid
tickets may cause a car to be towed, and the files are
getting fatter with the unpaid bills.
Harlan Milder, a freshman law major, said that a
uniformity of ticketing was needed in parking areas.
He said he was ticketed in an area on Hast Campus, and
when he went to another area, illegally parked cars
were not ticketed there.
Markle said the department has been short on workers
all winter, and often tickets are given on "spot checks."
Milder's complaint that Hast Campus lots are less
ticketed was not acted on because of the absence of a
quorum.
The next meeting of the Parking Advisory Committee
will be April 5 at 2:30 p.m. at the UNL Police
Department. Items to have been acted on Tuesday will
be rescheduled for this meeting. Changes in parking
regulations, information on the committee's role in the
appeals process and proposal's on night enforcement,
permit fees, Area 7 parking for coaches, and raising meter
rates will be discussed.
