Alter winning five fights Friday night,
the UNL boxing team saw their champion
ship hopes go up in smoke Saturday at
the 50th Midwest Golden Gloves boxing
tournament in Omaha.
"We clutched," Coach Randy Nelscn
said.
All four UNL boxers who traveled lo
the tournament lost their fights, although
Felix Konat won his first bout against
Mark Robinson of Hastings in the 1 05
pound class semifinal.
Konat then lost a third-round decision
to Stan Smith of Omaha.
Smith had an advantage in height and
experience, Nelscn said. The fight was
close and both boxers sustained injuries,
he said.
Marc Grimminger lost a decision to
Mike Donahuy at Hastings in the 178
pound semifinal. Donahuy went on to
win the Midwest championship
John Krolikowski lost his
Marlon Thomas of Omaha in
weight division. The referee
fight in the second round.
Carl Von Rein lost a decision to William
Hill of Omaha in the super-heavyweight
championship bout.
Hill had a distinct height advantage
over Von Rein. Nelscn said Hill's left
jabs scored the points that won the fight.
Von Rein couldn't get inside to score
the points he needed.
In one of Friday's fights, Konat bat-

. tered Fli Martinez until the referee stopped
(he contest 2:39 into the second round.
Martinez injured his right arm and his
trainer threw in the towel.
I he match between Grimminger and
Joe Fscamilla in the 178-pound weight
class also was called because of injury.
Grimminger dominated the first round.
He was aggressive and was scoring punches.
At 23 seconds into the round, Fscamilla
grabbed his arm in pain and the referee
called the match in favor of Grimminger.
Von Rein destroyed both of his oppo
nents Friday night. Von Rein did not have
any fights during the regular season; no
one could be found to get into the ring
with him. Although he said he had some
apprehensions about fighting in front of
a crowd, his boxing tactics were impec
cable. In Von Rein's first match, he knocked
Rick Fberhardt of Grand Island down
twice. Von Rein seemed cautious; he
.didn't throw very many punches, but the
ones he did throw usually hit the
mark. The referee gave Fberhardt four
standing eight counts before he called
the fight, 2 34 into the first round.
Von Rein's second opponent, Robert
Starr, showed more puglisitic finesse than
Fberhardt, but couldn't overcome Von
Rein's power. Starr was given two standing
eight counts in the first round after sustain
ing blows from Von Rein. He barely made
it through the second round and the refere
referee called the contest 1 :37 into the
third round after Von Rein landed a mas
sive blow to Starr's chest.
