Daily Nebraskan SrammmnieD's have ten dnsnnxce fo mei !0UV UVLUU UUCHLiiVJUUOillD By Mark Quandahl This weekend's "Last Chance Invitational" at the Bob Devaney Sports Center pool is aptly named, be cause, as Nebraska's women's swimming coach Ray Uuppert explained, "It gives us one more opportunity for our swimmers, and other swimmers coming up, to qualify for Nationals." "The final qualifying date is March 7," Huppert said. "So they have this weekend to try and make their cuts." Coach Huppert said the meet "is an open invitation," but he expected Kansas, Iowa State and Iowa to bring individuals hoping to qualify for specific events. "I feel we're going to qualify a great number of people. Unfortunately at the Big Eights (held last weekend in Norman, Okla.) we had about five of our athletes who were sick," Huppert said. "And yet they competed really well and came in second at the conference meet. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-1761 $2.50 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. He said the team missed qualifying for National, in the 200 freestyle by eight-one hundredths of a second, "and that's not even a blink ot an eye." The Huskers' 400 freestyle relay missed qualifying by five-tenths of a second and Linda Sebesta missed qualifying in the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 individual medley, all by less than half a second. All-American Sherri Hayward missed out on qualifying in the 100 back by only three tenths of a second. "So we're all really close to that," said Huppert, "and I think we're going to see quite a few more qualifiers." Cornhuskers that have already qualified for Nationals included Hayward in the 200 backstroke, and the 800 freestyle relay team of Linda Sebesta, Shauna Gilmore, Emily Ricketts and Hayward. "However, we'd like to have a few more." Huppert had very high expectations for the NCAA meet, which will be held at the Bob Devaney pool March 17 to 19. He said that this year will be the first time there will only be one national meet, because of the AIAWs decision to fold. That, along with the fact of the 1984 Olympics cloud hanging over the swimmers' heads, should add up to an extremely last meet. Huppert said the NCAA meet might provide a pretty good preview of the U.S. women's swim team for the 1984 Olympics, and that he expected m3ny meet records to fall. Huppert said he hoped many Nebraska fans would show up for the meet because that would add extra in centive for the Huskers "if the home-town fans were there cheering them on."
